Is there a plan for LXDE and XFCE DEs?

Postby mmutoo » Jul 13th, '12, 05:15

Hi all,
I was wondering if there is a plan for LXDE, XFCE or other DE spins of mageia. I know that they all can be installed from the repos, however, a specializes spin of mageia with (for example) LXDE DE would be much easier, and more convenient. For example, the installed software will be lighter (those specific to LXDE). Just to give you an example, I have installed mageia from DVD, with LXDE. It did not detect any of the keyboard multimedia keys (Gnome does detect them), all the default software are from Gnome, and even pcmanfm could not open the folder with root access (which I managed to make work with changing the advanced option after installing gksu package and adding "gksu %s").

For something like that, we would need much more people being active in QA -> viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2910 . Currently there are already too many images and variations to test, so probably there won't be any official spin-offs, but that shouldn't prevent anybody from doing their own spinoffs if they are that interested in them.

Thanks doktor5000! :) Unfortunately, I am a beginner in Linux world. I would have done it if I could. I hope somebody becomes interested, and starts the first derivative.

I use LXDE as my backup DE in Cauldron, but I'm pretty sure even MGA 2 has the meta-task LXDE which incorporates nicely. What specific feature/function are you looking for in an official LXDE spin?

for XFCE 4.10, just try compile & install the source package yourself, it is really easy!
if someone try it and hit the wall, please ask some question here, i will answer!

Well, OP is looking for an easier way of getting LXDE/XFCE with appropriate set of apps for those DEs so that not only meta-package, but also additional software suitable for the DE in question will be automatically installed during OS install. I undestand that need. Most distros will give you just those two behemoths with ton of useless shit.

I guess, but really, I only guess and I can be totally wrong here - compiling Xfce doesn't really fit his needs. Not that it wouldn't be convenient or anything..
But still ... it's 2012. Who's gonna compile DE on his home machine FFS.
It's unbelieveable how some users can be picky, sane even, so they want task-manager, or god forbid, screenshot shooter!

@OP.
It's sort of understandable to want such a spin, but it's also understandable that Mageia as of now doesn't have one. I guess the only choice now would be doing minimal install and then installing additional stuff. I'm not on Mageia, but people who use it will likely give advice about packages to be installed for your desired effect.
Or, you can always get the Fedora LXDE or Xfce spin. :)

Well, with the huge variety of desktop/window manager setups, you can't have an appropriate edition for everyone. And we currently don't have the manpower or the ressources to whip up something like Suse Studio or Fedora Revisor, but maybe a remaster tool would be sufficient so that everybody can create his own blend if he likes?

Feel free to port this for Mageia and send it to the sysadmins or mageia-dev mailing list for discussion.

IMHO, OP's opinion has point, user often chose easy selection.

my mageia cauldron, i almost forgot how it is difficult to get right there..
today, i try to reinstall mageia cauldron, because current my mageia couldn't play music.
fresh installed mageia 2 was fine to make sound, but, cauldron didn't worked with my sound card..

after upgrade version 2 to cauldron, i encountered with old problem again, nouveau driver problem..
cauldron didn't ask me to select nouveau driver for new updated linux kernel.

so i have to waste some time to solve manual nvidia driver install, then i stopped and look around other distro,
see there, freebsd 10, but it is not downloadable ATM, then i found sabayon 10 has XFCE version, then i chose it.

just my 0.2 cent.
