Great work on Mageia 2

Postby brian99 » Jun 5th, '12, 16:47

Hi

I was a long time Mandriva user - since 2001 - and having just installed Mageia 2 on a Toshiba R630 laptop, I have to say that the long depression I felt at the decline of Mandriva has been lifted! Mageia 2 feels fast and looks elegant (as did Mandriva in the heyday). What really draws me to Mageia is that I think it has the best implementation of KDE anywhere; as a KDE user, my decision on a distro is largely determined by how well it does KDE, and so far I have to give Mageia 9/10. I also really like how the new governance structure and community have come together. In my day job I am a sociologist at the University of London, and I've done some research on the KDE project from a sociological perspective:

http://dot.kde.org/2012/01/10/interview-brian-alleyne-sociologist-studying-kde

At the moment I am working on a research paper on how community is imagined and constructed in FLOSS worlds, and one case study I am using is the emergence of Mageia out of Mandriva, so I hope people don't mind if I ask the odd question about the Mageia community. I like to be open and transparent about my research.

So, I've decided to join the Mageia community and hope to be able to contribute as far as I can. Congratulations to Anne and the whole team for a wonderful release.

Some people?
Back in September 2010 I was debating whether to follow Mageia when it forked.
I did a headcount of the IRC chan, and found that the vast majority of the names I recognized form #mandriva were in #mageia. That's what decided it for me, most of the community forked, I'll go with them. And I'm glad I did

I am new to this forum but I can appreciate the initial posting. Since I discovered Linux a little over a year ago, Mandriva was a distibution that intrigued me and I grew fond of. But then the corporate issues and breakdowns I read about through Distrowatch articles made me think twice. And the Rosa style was a bit overly-ambitious after a while. Some would also disagree here, but PCLinuxOS is a fork of Mandriva too (don't mention that in the forums over at PCLinuxOS cause they will run you out of there) but even they could not compare to Mandriva. But Mageia, especially Cauldron is good work, especially for a small team of developers to have undertaken and accomplished and so please continue. I'd love even to contribute to wiki's and how-to's maybe.

I too like the KDE look and feel but my only request is somehow integrate the option normally found in the settings for the menu launcher to switch to kick-off style and all will be great. I had to create a new panel in order to do that. But that is a minor preference for me :)

So job well done.

If you want to contribute, I know that QA is constantly looking for more people. Documentation is also very important, so please, do what is fun for you!

You didn't need to do that.
Right-click the panel (or desktop or anything really) > Unlock widgets.
Right-click the Mageia orb > Switch to kickoff launcher. ;P

Oops. That is right. I forgot about that I guess. Cause I later remembered for the newtork manager widget.

I will take a look into the QA opportunities. Thanks.

Please don't use fullquotes when you only want to do a short reply, so use "Reply" button instead of "Quote" button. Actually you should almost never use fullquotes.
