Mageia and linux gaming hang out/tournament

Postby p_d_robo » May 29th, '12, 05:15

Hello Magical Mageia forum!

I had an idea for gaming and Mageia – the main motivator behind this was to create fun ways for the Mageia community to interact, get to know each other: To share the Magic ;)

The general idea was once a week or so to host a session for the most played games on Mageia/Linux aimed at Mageia players to hangout and play together– and possibly create tournaments from this with community leader boards etc. (of course anyone else could join but the focus would be for Mageia)

Looking into the future and assuming this was reasonably popular we could even develop a fun tournament for players who use different distro's: a fun distro vs distro play off's again with tournaments.

I do realise the criticism often aired towards linux in general for the lack of gamers but when I play Tremulous or Xonotic for example I frequently get into conversations with players about the linux distro I use (i usually use the distro i use to form part of my players name)

So whats your thoughts and would you be interested ?

Hedgewars is cool, haven't played it in a while.

I'm going through a OpenTTD phase at the moment - not sure how popular this one is around here though

Isn't that still in Alpha?
I've tried several alphas, and never gotten it to run well. Probably because my sucky graphics controller.

Yes, 0ad is still in alpha, but playable in my opinion. I have a Geforce 8600m.

My problem with it (including the latest alpha Jhelum) is that it fills my 2 gigs of swap (with memory leaks i suspect) in ~1 hour, and then it lags horribly. However, killing some enemies will somewhat reduce memory consumption. Then, the gameplay can get extremely fast (to catch up all previous lagging i suppose).

In single player, the lagging I experience is mainly due to computer opponents, which grow in population much faster than humanly achievable. I have tried multiplayer once. It lagged too, but that may be due to the 3 computer opponents we were playing against. More investigation is needed to see how well it plays without computer opponents.
