If I don't switch to Legacy mode for Mageia 5, then UEFI blocks Mageia, and sees the Windows bootloader as corrupted. If I switch to UEFI, I can get into Windows just fine but can't get into Mageia 5. I had resized the Windows 8.1 drive for Mageia 5, allotted 300 GBs for it. Could not get into Windows using grub; it would see the bootloader as corrupted as well when I tried. The UEFI on this thing does not like Legacy mode at all.
I don't have Mageia 5 installed atm, but I am using the live KDE DVD.
It's a bit disconcerting, UEFI is, as all this switching back and forth in the BIOS to get into whichever OS can't be good for the computer in general. A few niggles to work out with Mageia 5, and I won't have to worry about it any more... I can install it again as I had previously.

This is resolved, thanks. Working fine now.

I just put this on a new ASUS Z97 MOBO in a i5 Quad Core and 8 Gig RAM. This is my first hardware with UEFI.

The UEFI installation went smoothly after I figured out some quirks in my system. The MOBO BIOS was a bit strange in the setting of the default boot sequence. Only DVD and SSD were available, even when a flash drive was plugged in. I ended up going into the Advanced mode where I found a section called Boot Override. All of the devices were there. I used the Boot Override to boot the Live version off of a flash drive (to test it out).

I used the Classic DVD installer to do the actual installation, and the first time I ran it, I chose the first DVD device I saw in the Boot Override list. The installer started with the legacy install, which I did not want. So I shut it down and went back to BIOS and saw that the DVD had two devices, one to boot legacy and the other to boot UEFI. When I booted the installer UEFI, it started the UEFI install. It was not clear to me that the way to choose which install to use was by booting one image or the other. But it was not difficult to figure out. Maybe my ASUS BIOS is odd.

After I figured out how to get the UEFI install running, the rest went smoothly. The partition defaults were spot on. ESP was created fine; Partitioning the disk was nearly instantaneous (SSD), unlike the bad old days of waiting for minutes. I had it running in a half hour or so.

Wonderful distro.

Hi Folks,

I just installed it on an AKOYA "The Touch Ten" E123XT (MD 99410) Notebook dual with windows 10 and had absolutely no problems. It's great, fast and fine. You really did an outstanding job. Thank you very much!

There is just one thing to mention: Shutdown doesn't kill the watchdog, so the power stays on.

Sorry for my poor english and greetings from Frankfurt/Germany.

info Lenovo Y700
I bought a Lenovo Y700 laptop a few weeks ago. I connected an external USB DVD-drive .
Being cautious I used the Live Mageia to resize the Win-partition. Then rebooted to see that Win is still working and as explained it had to do a "chkdsk" on the HDD (1000GB). This took 5 to 6 hours and I was wondering wether it would complete. it did. Then disabled fast startup and secure boot.
Then I made a normal UEFI install of Mageia 5.1 .
Everything works fine including dual-boot. I have not tested all the hardware. But what I need works out of the boks. The full HD screen is also recognized and working.

What do you mean by watchdog in particular? You may want to consider creating a separate thread about that issue.
FWIW you may also want to consider using our german forum https://forums.mageia.org/de - just in case.

Well, I'm afraid my english and my knowledge are too bad. When you boot windows, this process gets activated and I feel (I don't know) it stays activated and makes a restart when you shut down under Mageia.

Tried to answer, but failed. I'm afraid my english and my knowledge are too bad. The watchdog-process gets activated and works in the background, when you start win10. And I feel (I don't know) it still works when you leave windows and boot Mageia later. And when you want to shut down, it makes a restart.

I was given a Dell XPS desktop which had suffered difficulties due to Microsoft's forced Win10 conversion, and after fixing that with a win10 flash-drive I'd made off of another computer, I installed Mageia 5 (64 bit) for a dual boot.
This killed the Windows 10 boot, and left me with a Mageia 5 only computer... but I've figured out what I did wrong, and I'll put that info here in case someone else is as careless as I was:
Use Grub2, not Grub.
I selected Grub2 in the Mageia boot setup wizard to replace Grub, and shazam... Now I've got another dual boot system.

I hope this is the place for this.
I'm trying to dual boot Mageia 5 with Win 10 on a Samsung NVME SSD.
I have reached the stage where Mageia is installed on the SSD but I just can't get it to boot. No matter how I set the boot options in the UEFI, it either boots straight to Windows or claims it can't find a boot partition.

My first thought was that Mageia is being installed in Legacy mode but I have no way to prove it. I've tried a number of tricks found on line,, using Grub 2 made no difference and neither has anything else.

The Mageia Wiki has a lot of information on UEFI and Dual Boot systems, but unfortunately all the screen shots neccessary to make sense of it are missing. I chose Mageia because it claimed to be UEFI "friendly" but after 3 days I'm no further advanced that what I was when I hit the Download button. :(

All assistance gratefully received.

TIA

Hello,

Yes, we are having problems with the wiki.
If you already have Windows 10 there is chances that it uses the UEFI mode. In this case, you have no choice to install Mageia you must install it in UEFI mode using Grub2-efi.
Before the Mageia installation, you have to disable the secure boot in the firmware, and in Windows, disable the Fast boot and shutdown Windows, no hibernation.
Then you can boot on your Mageia DVD or USB stick, the first screen you get must be this one:
Image
with this screen, you can go on, if you have another screen with a menu in the bottom, there is something wrong.

Regarding NVME, that could be the issue. You may want to use the forum search function to search for NVME, there were others that had this problem and succeeded with the installation.

Righto, up and running :)
I think the problem might have been that first off I was trying to install from the Live DVD rather than the Full Install one. Once I had the right DVD it installed first go and the dual boot with Win 10 works just as it should. (Yay)
I now have a video driver problem but I post that in a different thread.

Thanks to all that helped
