Feature planning for Mageia 5

Hi all,

as Mageia 4 has been successfully released and the most severe bugs ironed out,
the developers and packagers are setting sails to head for the next big milestone, which will end up in nearly 9 months in Mageia 5.

So please everybody read up on https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Features_policy and propose new features as described there.
Please keep in mind that simply adding a wiki page is not enough, you also need to organize people to implement this,
e.g. discuss this with developers, packagers or Atelier team members (if it's about graphics or sound theme or similar)
and also review the existing feature requests, maybe one of those already fits your wish.

Already proposed features for Mageia 5: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Category:Pro ... ureMageia5

Do you think that it would be OK to update the "Distribution Development" links on the wiki front page to point to Mageia 5? I could probably do so some time tomorrow or Wednesday, 11th or 12th March, unless someone else does so first.

Sure, feel free to do so. Just whipped the above linked page up for Mageia 5 as it didn't exist yet.

is it time, now to add another checkbox alongside the one for include non free repo,

unticked by default, but available for users to make their own choice at install.

named "enable tainted repos"

It could save some really new mageias users some pain, and avoid threads like I cant get DVD's to work in mageia.

That option already exists in Mageia 5 installer. In fact it has been there at least since Mageia 3.

im sorry, ill have to check again, i thought it only said non-free
wonder why so many people have trouble enabling tainted repos...

edit, im not in a position to test this with an install dvd but

according to this online blog of mageia 4, http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2014/02/12/ma ... -desktops/

only non-free exists in the place i suggested above, maybe tainted is selectable, im not chalenging that, but not here its not, which was my point.

regards peter

Since there are no tainted packages on the iso's, it is necessary to first enable online sources in order for the tainted option to appear. It is desirable to enable online sources in any case, since there are very probably updates that will have been released since the iso was spun.

@Peter: The issue is simply that we cannot enable tainted by default, as there may be legal issues in your country with some of the packages in tainted.
But since we have mageiawelcome, this should be even easier - if people don't find it now, then I don't know how to improve that ...

I never suggested enable by default.

the online installers are working satisfactorily, so if you enable the tick as its your choice, theres no reason why during install the tainted
cant come into play and substitute the tainted rpm's by default.
this would eradicate so many less than capable users issues.

unticked by default, but available for users to make their own choice at install.

named

The following requires an internet connection, to access the tainted repos!
Tainted repos, may not be legal in your location, please ensure you fully understand this
"enable tainted repos" () tick

Sorry Peter, seems I misunderstood your proposal, it's clear now and comprehensible.

Although IMHO, if you don't force some big obvious blinking "read my thoughts and do magic" button directly in the users face,
then there will always be such issues. I mean, MageiaWelcome applet comes up on each default install, and offers the users a one-stop
shop to enable media and install important codecs easily.
I don't think adding some checkboxes in installer will make it more obvious to users.

... Hmm, so what's a repo? What's tainted? Naah, sounds disgusting, I'll ignore that ...

Sorry, but how often do you want to ask this question again? 4 mails to mageia contact mail adress were not sufficient?
You already got two answers on your question, so why do you ask the same question again? Honestly, did you actually read the replies?
Did you test the rust package that we have in Mageia 5?

I don't even understand what you're referring to in particular
https://github.com/PistonDevelopers/image ?
https://github.com/PistonDevelopers/graphics ?
https://github.com/gfx-rs/gfx-rs ?

Apart from that, the feature planning for Mageia 5 is closed since months.
