@rinjsma: Ok, but we need more packagers for things like that. Did you just volunteer? ;)

I've never done a thing like that.
I did program an awfull lot with GFA on Atari and I know some other old languages, but that
is out of time I'm afraid.
I'm a normal user now with some skill (and distrohopping lately because of all the changes).
I'm very interested in Linux. But if I can learn something somewhere it is right with me. ;)

The better the desktop with the classic controls, the less chance of Mondriaan rectangles...!

Then feel free to sign up on https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Becoming_a_M ... candidates
or come over to irc://irc.freenode.net/#mageia-mentoring if you have some questions. It's not that difficult, and not
really about programming, but still interesting :)

could you explain the gnome 2 thing?
RedHat6 is running Gnome2 until 2017...
there must be some sort of updates

Well, the fact that Redhat pays many of the Gnome developers, and Redhat is a commercial enterprise linux distribution,
speaks for itself, no? We just don't have the available ressources to maintain a full desktop environment, when it's unsupported upstream.

Understand I'm not trying to pick a fight & further I do realize that the developer resources are slim...
all the stuff with gnome is a topic of discussion in many places
the 2 stable distros directly downstream of RH, Centos & ScientificLinux are on G2 until 17?
could be that they are just behind in development, content to stay with the status quo?

certainly by the time RH7 comes out G3 will be well sorted out, assuring a smooth transition for the commercial customers

Well, they are just offsprings of RHEL, so they get what's in there because they recompile RHEL, and don't have to do their own maintenance, to simplify it.

But the proper place for discussion of this topic is not really here, please either look at viewtopic.php?f=29&t=1683 or post at the mageia-dev mailing list, where this was already discussed, cf.: https://www.zarb.org/pipermail/mageia-d ... 10959.html

I appreciate the attention and clarification. I do not like to see in Mageia what ROSA made with KDE Mandriva. Making a more user-friendly desktop for me that does not mean too much customization. The user has the right to know every desktop as it was designed. I speak of minor adjustments that do not make the setup very difficult for the beginner.

Anyway, I was very happy with the appearance of Mageia, since Mandriva was not adopting a very viable way. As a Brazilian, I regret only that the Conectiva - an excellent distribution and the very thing that gave the Linux world - has been absorbed by a failed project.

Which package manager will Mageia 2 adopt? Urpmi?
Wouldn't it be nice to have yum on board?

What for? Why should we adopt a new package manager as default?
BTW: yum was even available for Mageia 1, so it will be available for Mageia 2.

On the other hand, now it's way too late to ask wishes for Mageia 2, version freeze just hit yesterday.

Guessed something like that, the post just didn't make any sense in context. Keep up the good work :)
