How about a way to rate software? Doesn't have to be exactly like Mints manager, but a way for people who are transfer from Windows/Mac to get an Idea of what is popular.

what is the status of the permanent wiki?
MCC is nice, but some of the features are buried
as I find these details,
I don't mind helping as I learn these little bits
I understand there are some issues with using the mandriva documentation
if it's a problem of hosting
http://www.wikidot.com/
& a couple of google accounts will go a long way
there's a lot to do
the more inclusive, the faster it will go
when can we start? :D

just my personal opinion, i know this may not agree with others here.

Theres nothing wrong with MCC, dont change it just for the sake of it.

Im sure there are plenty of improvements to Mageia that would be beneficial to the long term to the popularity of Mageia.

but changing MCC is in my opinion unnecessary, bit like the changes that have happened to thunderbird (again in my opinion.)

ive never found anything i could be critical about this part of the distrib.

the only part i could be critical about, and this includes Mageia as much as Mandriva is the upgrade between versions.

+1
MCC is working so far, and rather complete, only small bugfixes needed.

What would interest me is which Thunderbird changes do you mean?

KDE on screen keyboard needed for the CDrom/live install.
On a tablet PC.
I just tried running the live distro from a USB key and it doesn't include an installable keyboard - would be nice to include if there is still room on the CDrom for a touchscreen keyboard for KDE

Good idea if you like it that way. But possible too: maybe buy a transformer? :D
A touchscreen keyboard is a horror to use in my opinion.

Personally, I like using a keyboard, but if someone were to load Mageia on a tablet, it would make sense from their point of view that they be able to use a touchscreen keyboard.

I've seen plenty of interesting operating systems come and go, and the ones that are almost guaranteed to disappear are the ones that exclude potential users versus try to include potential users. Sure, plenty of people won't go much beyond the basics, but there are/will-be some that will be curious to try go a little further, therefore, if you drop the barrier of entry (for example, make it easier by including something that seems basic, like a touchscreen keyboard for a tablet), then you make it easier for potential newbies to come see what Mageia's got. The big operating systems are quite aware of this concept and bend-over backwards to make it easier for newbies to enter their ecosystem... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMU0tzLwhbE

to clarify I'm here because of the Unity desktop environment, becoming the default...
I have older hardware & probably always will
the dictatorial way Mark Shuttleworth runs Ubuntu seems counter to OSS, it's his little goat rodeo, so he can do what he wants
Unity caused me to distro shop
I like what I found here
I like the way this version of gnome handles workspaces, I don't know what will happen when we are forced to use gnome shell
KDE is interesting, but it's just so buggy, there is too much choice
I always seem to find a way to break it

I don't need my DE to be universal, I make phone calls on my phone

You are not alone!

I have tried Xfce and Lxde both with some KDE apps for a longer time now
and I like it. (Not on Mageia - I have an install and build up of Mageia as clone.
It can be back in minutes, but it is Gnome old and that's becoming Gnome new.)

I used KDE 3.5 and switched at 'new KDE 4-time' to Gnome old.
I have tried Xfce/Lxde because of the arrival Unity/Gnome3 of which
the makers say it is 'good and convenient for us'. :o

Xfce and Lxde (lighter) are fine platforms on which one can install a
lot of non-Xfce and non-Lxde applications. But... how long will these stay???
I'm almost tired of it. :D

And I have seen what Windos 8 could be. :o  Ugly. No desktop. Only rectangles...
Is this the same (but then in OS-land) like what we see on financial markets? Or what?!

I'm going to be stubborn about the way workspaces behave
on any of our 3 computers
my wife's stuff is on WS 1, mine on 2, music on 3, remote desktops of 4
it keeps the confusion to a minimum
I'll probably be forced to use KDE at some point...
my world is in flux at the moment, [we just moved]
hopefully soon I'll be able to get a Gnome shell working somewhere, fedora is a bit over my head :D

What do you mean? Did you have problems booting i586 distribution on a system which doesn't have PAE enabled?
That would be the default for most older boxes. Never heard of such a problem so far ...

the previous distro that i used was SL 5.6 and that was because i couldn't istall the latest version SL 6 which turned that couldn't be installed on non-pae machines (like my IBM ThinkPad R51). i hope this doesn't happens with mageia 2 because i was told there is no cure for this kind of trouble.. :)

That would be really weird, as PAE is not really that common, i'd say rather rare.
So only allowing an i586 distro to be installed on machines with PAE enabled would clear
out like 95% of the possible userbase. Could you post a link to your problem report for that distro?
Also, have you tried already with Mageia 1?

Out of curiosity, SL meaning Scientific Linux?

yeap it's scientific linux and that was my first linux experience two months ago..
i saw they found some kind of trick for that http://scientificlinuxforum.org/m/index.php/t621.html
and yes, i switched to mageia some days ago and it's really really brilliant so far in all kind of terms! 8-)

Hi,

I'm not technical, so I'll just ask questions about what I read on the Internet.

Mageia 1 is a fork of Mandriva 2010.2, while maintaining its technical features, updated and improved specific issues.

Mandriva 2011 has made major changes in Mandriva 2010.2, which is bad for stability, but it is interesting to test new tools, which is useful for any other Linux distribution.

Eugeni Dodonov made an comparison about technical aspects, in March 16, 2011 (in Br-Linux website Mageia Alfa 2), between Mandriva 2011and Mageia 1 ( Mandriva 2010).

Eugeni Dodonov said:

        - Mandriva uses systemd, ---> Mageia by default uses sysvinit

        - Mandriva uses networkmanager-mdv, ----> Mageia DrakX-net uses by default

        - Mandriva uses the same image for live/installation (created using livecd-tools),---> Mageia uses different images for installation, live and flash (and eventually created with bcd draklive)

        - Mandriva - KDE+ installs by default package selection, ---> Mageia shows a screen for choose packages

        - Mandriva uses rpm5, ---> Mageia uses rpm4

        - Mandriva uses Dracut, ---> Mageia uses initrd

Otherwise, most versions of packages is synchronized between Mandriva and Mageia .. both are more or less equal it.

What this new tools can be useful in Mageia 2 or Mageia 3?

Same here.
I have not managed to get it working with my 5 partition multiboot ext3 and ext4 Grub1/Grub2 system.
So I have the MBR with an older PCLOS and Grub1 and let the other distro's point to their
own patitions.

This way (menu.lst the old way/ Grub1):

The first 3 are of PCLOS.
I hope I can contunue to do this for a long time. It's so simple with 'redo MBR' of PCLOS.
Other distro? Install it on a partition, do redo-MBR, remove what's not necessary and there you go again.
More partitions? No problem. Other disks invoved? No problem.
I don't know yet how to do it just as simple with Grub2.

And so I can test what I want and keep what I like.
Clones and sometimes livecd's for backup.
