Should the LXQT desktop be included in Mageia?

Postby cyber-dragon-14 » May 9th, '14, 02:53

Question:

What does everyone think about the idea of including the LXqt desktop environment in the next release of Mageia?
Or, maybe making it available sooner for evaluation?

Re: Question and Poll

Please do not take this query as a negative.

There is already a number of D.E available for Mageia.

Is there a LXqt developer or group prepared to port to Mageia ?

Such a poll has a purpose only if there is someone willing to do it. So if you are willing please add more informations.

But idea itself is good. I think the best way to go is to start packaging it for Cauldron.

You do recognise that we already have LXDE and razor-qt? Because it also needs to be ensured there are no conflicts,
that they can be installed in parallel, and that there's a smooth migration from razor-qt/LXDE to LXQT.
We should probably wait until they release their first stable version, and then replace razor-qt and LXDE with it.

So please add an option to you poll:
Maybe, when it's stable and there are Mageia packagers willing to maintain it

If you really want it, you can try to rebuild the OpenMandriva packages.

I heard Wally speaking about trying to package it on #mageia-dev yesterday:

<Luigi12_work> proyvind: The Qt-based LXDE was released yesterday
<Luigi12_work> http://sourceforge.net/p/lxde/mailman/message/32310545/
<[mbot> [ LXDE - Lightweight X Desktop Environment / Mailing Lists ]
<wally_> do we have a maintainer for it or should I fork lxde pkgs? :)(
<wally_> for testing purposes
<Luigi12_work> wally_: feel free to fork. From the announcement it sounds like it's more razor-qt-based, so if we have that packaged, it might be easier to start with a fork from that
* Aussie_matt_ a quitté (Remote host closed the connection)
<wally_> IIRC razor-qt comes pretty much from one soucr tarball
<wally_> and lxqt tarballs follows pretty much lxde pkg names
<wally_> but I'll investigate this
<Luigi12_work> interesting. Thanks for looking into it :o)
<wally_> first I need to find out the build order :)
<Luigi12_work> I wonder if they plan on porting LXDM. If we had a Qt port of that, maybe it could become the new default DM since KDM is deprecated
<wally_> saw lightdm greeter pkg in suse repos
<Luigi12_work> ahh

So it might be packaged for Mageia 5 yes. BTW the poll doesn't make much sense, because we can't include something in Mageia 5 _without_ having it sooner in Cauldron to evaluate it :)

I have nothing against the idea. As long as there are people willing/able to make it happen. That's always an issue. :)

FWIW, I've rebuilt all of the lxqt packages for Mageia 4, and added lxqt-panel and a task-lxqt.
I've asked one of our forum members If he would be so kind to offer FTP space for those.

Otherwise, if someone has space to upload the packages to, be my guest.

All packages have been uploaded to pete910's server. Repos can be added like this:

Code: Select all
urpmi.addmedia unreal http://mageia.unrealnetworks.co.uk/mga4/x86_64

Code: Select all
urpmi.addmedia unreal_noarch http://mageia.unrealnetworks.co.uk/mga4/noarch

Simply install task-lxqt to pull in all packages that exist currently.

Thanks doktor5000,
I've been wanting to try it out for some time now. That'll be on my todo list for this weekend :-)
I am running razorqt right now, and was a little surprised when they announced the merge with lxde. But after some digging around I've come to the conclusion that it will be for the best. More people working on it will mean better support.

And I voted "Yes. The sooner the better..."

For Mageia 5 it will replace razor-qt. For the packages I've uploaded, any feedback yet? It felt even a bit snappier compared to LXDE or razor-qt ...

edit doktor5000: all testing results and feedback please in the separate thread: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=7604

I did. Maybe the title of the thread should be changed. But I am to new to this distribution to pretend giving any advice of this type. ;)
Thanks.

You did what? Seems you replied to the wrong thread. This one is the original poll, and the title is pretty much obvious ...

You are right.

Nevertheless, it should be included!
