Perfomance benchmarking

Postby kensor » Jul 3rd, '11, 21:55

A well-chosen selection of performance benchmarking tools for various parts of the distribution could be informative and useful. Kernel, application, development, network, video and other areas of interest come to mind when thinking about what sort of tests to choose. Whether these would best be installed individually, as desired, or in a task-package, is a further consideration. Perhaps some of them might be integrated into the Mageia Control Center if their performance does not otherwise suggest a command line preference.

Quite likely yes. I found the suite, downloaded it, ran the installer, read some documentation, installed nine php modules of various names, executed the main package at the command line once, then tried to launch the GUI, at which point the response was $ phoronix-test-suite gui
PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib/php/extensions/php_gtk2.so' - /usr/lib/php/extensions/php_gtk2.so: undefined symbol: php_cairo_get_context_ce in Unknown on line 0
Since I don't know that there is a convenient way to download and install php_gtk2.so from Mageia, I think my original request for a testing package is reinforced by the difficulty of installing this one. I don't mean to turn this reply into a support incident, but merely to say that an easily installable and usable package as the Phoronix Test Suite may be were a little attention paid to it might be a good addition for Mageia.

Installing/running the Phoronix suite on Mageia is easy.
Install php-gtk2 from Rpmdrake (install also php-cairo to get rid of that error.)
Get the generic Phoronix suite: http://www.phoronix-test-suite.com/down ... uite-3.2.1
Extract the archive and run install.sh for installing it on the system or more simple run phoronix-test-suite to start the suite (without installing it) from within that folder.
For the moment Phoronix suite doesn't have a GUI. It was removed temporarily.
From the changelog:
Phoronix Test Suite 3.0 Alpha 1
9 November 2010
...................................................................
- pts-core: Temporarily drop the GTK2 GUI until it's been rewritten to be compliant with the PTS3 architecture
