Guarddog

Postby aselluza » Jun 24th, '11, 20:58

I'd like to suggest to build the rpm of guarddog for Mageia. it dissapeeared from Mandriva since it istarted to use KDE 4, but i saw Ubuntu keeps it also in KDE 4. for me it's the best and easiest firewall and i don't want a substitute but it, i loved how easy it was to choose the services to block and close and those to keep open. i'd really preciate it bak now in Mageia!

Aselluza,

New package requests can be made through:

Guarddog has not been developed since 2007. I used to use it but moved on.

Aselluza,

I use Firestarter ( http://www.fs-security.com/ ) for several years in Mandriva.

Firestarter is a firewall easy to use.

In a Mageia 1 I'm using the package "Firestarter" for Mandriva 2010.1, which can be downloaded from rpmbone ( http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/ ... 6.rpm.html ).

There is a site with several tips Using Firestarter, in portuguese and english

the problem is that every time you run, you must enter the root password, but for me it's ok

Note: I made request packages Firestarter in bugzilla mageia: bug 1033.

Ok, I'm trying it, but I don't see it so easy, in guarddog you can choose from a list which services to block, which to admit, like msn, edonkey, etc... i don't know how to configure that here. that's why i love guarddog, it's for people that know nothing at all, like me, completely graphical and easy...

There is a mandriva rpm on the guarddog site. You could try it. It might work with Mageia.

Aselluza,

Have you tried the firewall "Fwbuilder"?

This firewall has a package for Mageia 1 in official repository (media 1, 3, 11, 13, 21 and 23).

This week I made a table with list of software to Mageia and found this firewall "Fwbuilder", with video tutorial..

seems very well done :)

I tried Fwbuilder and it looks good but it's still too complicated for me. the greatest about guarddog is that it's the easiest one for someone who knows absolutly nothing about firewalls, with a complet list of all services usually used and just simple clicks to open or block them... can't find a good subnstitute for it yet, i'd really love it in mageia...

Aselluza,

I also tried Fwbuilder and it is difficult for me too.

My suggestion is you try to use Firestarter (see manual and screenshots), which is easy and tells in detail the IP being blocked (and machine name):

and have the option to open ports for each service that you want separately.

After install, enable tray icon in "edit", "preferences", tab "interface", and "Enable tray icon"

As suggested Isadora, You can also request in Bugzilla Mageia, add a package of Guarddog into repository of Mageia.
I request package for Firestarter in Bug 1033

Note 1: As Germ said, the last stable version of Guarddog is "2.6.0", 11 March, 2007. The site RPMBone makes available the package Guarddog 2.6.0 (guarddog-2.6.0-1mdv2008.1.i586.rpm) to Mandriva 2008.1.

Note 2: The site RPMBone makes available the package Firestarter 103 (firestarter-1.0.3-15mdv2010.1.i586.rpm) to Mandriva 2010.1.

Ok, I'm giving a try to Firestarter again, even though it stops itself pretty often...

Yes, I know.

I tried to install Guarddog 2.6.0 in "Mageia 1" with package to "Mandriva 2008.1" (guarddog-2.6.0-1mdv2008.1.i586.rpm), but is missing a library:
