[DONE] Rolling release questions / KDE monthly upgrades

Postby ralphdewitt » May 26th, '13, 19:26

I am wondering if it is possible for Mageia to shift to a rolling release model were the core is kept stable for say 6 months and the desktop (KDE) and apps are kept up to date?

This is not the first topic concerning rolling releases, see for example:

Thanks for your reply. Read through a lot of the posts. Seems to be the same pro and con arguments. With no decision reached. I only asked as I like to keep KDE updated to the latest monthly release. I am not familiar with Mageia enough to know if there was/is a Kubuntu like backport that would safely handle that task.

No, there probably won't be. But for your news, KDE 4.11 will be a longterm release, and the next time will probably be 4.12 aka KDE5 with no big changes.
If you really want the latest, you are free to use cauldron, which is our rolling release. But please carefully read the warnings! https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Cauldron
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

Thanks for your reply. I agree that there will probbly be no rolling release. I am learning to live without them. Stability is more important. That said I believe that rolling release does not have to mean breakages etc.
