[SOLVED] suggestion for KDE effects

Postby snevog » Sep 8th, '12, 20:41

Hello!

I came across this article on Phoronix http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=ubuntu_1210beta_desktops&num=1 about OpenGL performance across different desktops. The verdict is ...KDE 4.9 being the fastest Linux desktop when having KWin automatically suspend its effects on full-screen windows. This comparison is done on Ubuntu but results shouldn't be much different on Mageia.

This option is not enabled by default in Mageia 2, and I think it would be a good idea to have it enabled by default in Mageia 3. While it's easy to change that option in KDE System Settings, many users won't know about it.

What do you think?

Notified our KDE maintainer, he said that this is not enabled by default by upstream. Maybe you should report a bug upstream https://bugs.kde.org/ or ask kwin maintainer why this is not enabled by default, and about possible side effects.

Please don't! This is disabled by default for a very good reason, it triggers crashes because of some problems with graphics drivers, see: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=252817

KDE developers got flooded with bug reports because of this, although it only happens with some card/driver combinations. You can switch it on by yourself and see if things still work, but this would be a terrible default setting. I am starting to understand why the kwin developer hates these phoronix benchmarks: http://blog.martin-graesslin.com/blog/2 ... mpositors/

Thanks for your info!
In the end I didn't report anything, as this setting caused my system to freeze on some occasions, e.g. when running Skype video full-screen.
