PLF - Penguin Liberation Front and Mageia

I read on https://www.zarb.org/pipermail/plf-disc ... 05469.html that:
"The PLF admins have moved to Magia, maybe that would be
an alternative for you if you need the programs that were in PLF."

and
https://www.zarb.org/pipermail/plf-disc ... 05478.html
"Hi all!

As per my cooker@ post [1], I'm stopping the maintainership of my mdv
packages due to moving to Mageia. This includes my packages in the PLF
repository.

What is the connection between PLF and Mageia? The packages that were supported in PLF will be migrated to Mageia? What is the position of Mageia about PLF?

The most visual thing is their existance as provider of certain licensed software for Mandriva.

For Mandriva as a commercial company an "outside" distributor was needed for licensed software (such as some codecs, libdvdcss, etc.). That's what PLF did.
For Mageia this is not needed because Mageia supplies such software in their 'tainted' repository.

As for now Mandriva decided not to distribute a Linux distribution any more the reason for this special task of PLF is void as well. This may be the reason why the packagers are leaving this field of work, too. Simply said, this part of their work is not needed any more.

But of course the Penguin Liberation Front is much more than just this "3rd party" for certain software. They are a Linux community which does a lot for Linux and Open Source projects in France. During the startup of Mageia they provided the first servers for Mageia so we could move forward, as an example.

When did that happen? Did I miss something?

Obviously! :)
Mandriva SA decided to "put the distribution into the hand of the community".
Since June a workgroup (consisting of Mandriva SA, ROSA, and other participants) is working on creating a foundation which will be the maintainer/distributor of the distribution. The name of the organisation and the name of the future distribution is not decided yet.

Go to the Mandriva website and read the latest 10 blog entries.

Oh.
I think I knew that. But apparently the implications had escaped me.
