Ever consider switching base arch from i586 to i686. When choosing what distribution to put on my main system, i686 would have made Mageia an easy choice. I did end up choosing Mageia but took a lot longer to decide.

The standard kernel is compiled for i686. (A separate i586 kernel is provided.) My understanding is that the consensus opinion of the dev's is that compiling all packages for i686 does not provide any significant improvement in performance, although there are those who disagree.
Mageia is at present providing kernels that correspond to those provided by Mandriva:
