Target user?

Postby Trio3b » Jun 28th, '12, 18:05

Sorry if these topics have been addressed but there is only so much time to read. Before I submit proposals, maybe someone could respond with knowledge.

I am a business user currently testing Mageia and PCLOS to replace MDV 2008.1. I had very good run with MDV2005 for about 3 yrs and MDV2008.1 for another three years. I have read many of the threads regarding release cycle and suggestions for iso. packages . Also have read mission statement and features/proposals for Mageia 3 but have not come across an answer to my question.

1. I did not see what the target user is. Home user, hobbyist, media consumer, business user, everybody ?

2. Release cycle has been accepted at 9 mo. support at 18 mo. Has any decision been made for extended support of particular releases?

3. From a business view, breakage caused by constant upgrades cannot be tolerated. I realize some upgrades are not the fault of the distribution but am looking for one that will minimize breakage. Will it be possible in Mageia to "roll back" to earlier package versions in the event that an upgrade does cause problems?

4. Mageia has scripts to d/l and install flashplayer. Could they not also use a script to d/l and install LibreOffice? This would open up much much room on CD/DVD for printer packages, cameras, scanners drivers, codecs, etc

Thanks for your time.

I haven't heard anything official for target audience, but I really think mageia 2 would work well for buisness needs in the not going patch crazy regard. I came to it off of mandriva and the stability difference, has been night and day. The patches I've seen since it rolled off of cauldron have all been for bug fixes I never even saw the bug related to, ended up rechecking that I had my update sources set right, becuase so few bug patches were required.

Another fact to consider is that we're all volunteers, are there are only few packagers but thousands of packages, and currently ~1800 unmaintained packages. So for many problems there were just not enough resources or nobody issued a bug fix. So there are two sides to this.

I think one of your questions I can answer, this above, which are all users demand Mageia and many of them recently abandoning windows which still fear the use of Gnu/Linux, another example I could see even the Brazilian community of ubuntu there are many who migrated or dual boot with Mageia because it is a very stable distro that thing comes not occurring with ubuntu.

I didn't mean it as a snub I've found mageia 2 to be uncannily stable. I know you guys get a lot done from the number of patches I saw while it was still in cauldron :)
