What would be usefull, or not usefull on mageia

Postby pmithrandir » Mar 19th, '12, 11:35

Hello.

Sometimes, I think there is some package that should be installed by default on mageia. On the other hand, some of them seems very not usefull for mot of the users.

My idea is to allow you to give the list of what you think should be installed or not by default on mageia.

An example :

I think we should install that by default
- On KDE : KDE root menu. it is not easy to find in the RPM database, but this package change your life. Basically, you can do most of the main root command with your mouse on your user environnement. (copy, rename, edit...) If you use mageia in stable mode, you could forget the console at all with this software.
- smplayer : this player is way better than totem or dragon player. It allow you to read all media types, and to download subtitles if needed on a movie.
- MP3, DVD and all main codec should be installed by default. In a larger discussion, I would recommand to allow people to select a checkbox during the installtion to automaticly install all these non free stuff that are necessary to use the computer. (from graphic driver to skype or MP3 codec). A global validation.

I think we could remove these software by default.
- Internet software as IRC, ftp, rss... almost all the software located in Internet section. Either they are necessary for the guy who install mageia and he knows how to install them, or they are not and there is no needs to install them.
...

And you, what is your idea about it ?

I think that the number of different ideas about this is as large as the number of users who read this. May be that one or the other package is not necessarily important for many users, it may as well important for many others.

Just my personal ideas about your examples:
- From a technical point of view there is no reason for something like KDE root-menu, it is only for those with a konsole phobia.
- smplayer is one of the examples for a better video player than totem or dragon - you could as well opt for mplayer or vlc as "default"
- the question of non-free stuff during installation has been discussed often enough, not necessary to start this again with the same pros and cons.

That's the first answer to your ideas, showing totally different ideas already - see what I mean?

That's the idea, not to make everyone happy, but to get some differents ideas.
Maybe for some to discover that some tools exist. (I didn't know about kde root menu for years)

At the end, you get, I don't know, 25 or 100 people answering the question, and maybe it's going to be different for everybody, but maybe a lot of people are going to say : We don't use this program, so let's change it. I gave the smplayer example, but the choice could be VLC, I don't really care, if 90% of people need to install something else, that mean that dragon or totem are not the best choice, and that is the first information you get. to decide the software to replace them is another decision to take, but at least you know that you have a decsion to take.

The goal of the topic is not to argue about one or another software, but to know that there is something to do.

Yes, ok. Of course this is something for Mageia 3.
It needs an organized way to gather info fromt eh users, a summary after a certain time.
Then this summary needs the attention of the technical section.

So, time for you to set to work. :)

seting up something for such a trivial question? you expect souch answer that it would be necessarry to have a tool?

if people want to answer i can edit the first post manually with 2 lists.(wanted by default / unwanted)

Well,. depends on what you want. If you just want to let users talk about their preferences then this thread is ok.
But if you want to gather some information to be presented to the makers of Mageia3 you should do it in a qualified way:
Starting with a list of a user's (your) preferred apps of several sections, then other users can follow and add theirs
At the end it should show:
- number of users who participated
- ranking of apps in each section
How else could somebody who will compile the "default" list of apps do it without good data?
