Enter on Login Screen

Something that has changed since Mandriva that has really bugged me is at the login screen. One can no longer just hit enter (return) on their highlighted user name, but instead must use the mouse to make a selection. Any way we could get that changed to speed up the log-in process?

Thanks

Welcome to the Mageia-forum jjnova!!!!

You are right, one has to select a user before proceeding.
Wasn't aware about this, since i use autologin.
Be aware, using autologin of course, involves a security-risk.
I only use this function on test-systems.

Which display manager is used? the output of 'cat /etc/sysconfig/desktop' should tell.

It seems that's how GDM works, not sure if it's a bug on an intended behaviour.

You report it upstream https://bugzilla.gnome.org/ if you want (better to search there first, in case the issue was already reported).

It's not a GDM issue, it's the same with KDM.

Indeed; but the issue is more annoying with GDM, as the user name looks highlighted already so I'd expect that pressing Enter would show the password box, but that doesn't happen, you have to click the user name.

With KDM, the user name isn't highlighted at all when the kdm-greeter is stared, so you have to click anyway; but it's slightly better than GDM in that particular bit, as the "Username" box has focus and you can type the user name -> Enter -> focus moves to the password box -> type password -> Enter.

(Bottom line is, each tool has its own can of worms, one has to select the one that tastes less bad... :)).

Hmm, not matching my experience (Beta2, KDE, updates as of today 10:30 UTC ). The standard user is highlighted in kdm, still you have to click on it to transfer it to the userid field. Pls see screenshot.

Hmm, no, I don't think it's selected, this is just the Ia Ora color scheme which has alternate colours for rows, try clicking the username "wobo" and see if the colour becomes darker (i.e. selected).

You are right ahmad, one first needs to select the user.
It is alternate colours for rows, that makes it tricky.

Yeah; however there's an option in kdm settings (in systemsettings) to have a user pre-selected and a "focus password" option, so I boot -> Type password directly.

But there seems to be a workaround.

Go into System Settings -> System Administration -> Login Screen ->
tab Convenience.
Change "Preselect User", to whichever user you like.

Edit: sorry ahmad, both on same frequency. :D

Ah, ok, thx a lot to both of you! This workaround saves me almost 2 minutes per year! :)

No, in earnest, thx for the hint!

It's not about time, it's about the patience daily quota, it runs out quite fast. :)

Yes, I know. You get out of bed and 40% of that quota is already gone!
Isn't life brutal?

FWIW, it seems you can press Tab then select the username and press Enter and it'll show the password box, not perfect but can be done with the keyboard.

Edit: adding to the above, pressing the Up or Down Arrows can be used to select users too.
