since one of our distros goals is to be a full open source distro

i got this idea

how about using icecat instead of firefox

it based on firefox witout its trademarked artwork and some other things

and about the diffrences between firefox and icecat you can find it here

there might be some people says

there is a lot of people who like using webkit browsers instead firefox

so why we cant use like chromium or konqueror with webkit engine

alright ..... the reason that i didn't suggest webkit is

webkit does have some problem with webkit browsers

like browsing arabic characters on some of arabic sites

Since when isn't Firefox itself open source?

And i know the wikipedia page, still it doesn't tell any advantages against firefox.
The "security features" are available as addon and can be installed for firefox as well.
Also the trademarks are a non-issue.

So, my question still stands, what advantages would icecat bring over firefox?

Personally, it turns me off, as a user, when a distro gets on its soapbox over FOSS. I love FOSS and think it's great, but I respect those that don't want everything FOSS or anything at all. I want to keep on using the real nVidia drivers, and such. When distros get weird about the whole open source lifestyle, it just puts me off completely. Firefox is open source, even if the logos and name are trademarked. The GPL doesn't limit people from copyrighting their code, so why is a trademark so bad?

Well, each distribution is entitled to have their own picture and their own rules. We're not here to talk about others.
I see no reason to abandon Firefox just because of the logo & name issue they have with other distributions.

This prompts me to ask a question I've been meaning to ask for a while - why does Mageia need to rebrand SeaMonkey as IceApe? As I understand it, SeaMonkey has the exactly the same logo/name issues as Firefox, so if we can use Firefox, why can't we use SeaMonkey?

That's a rather good question, given the fact that even Fedora, who normally has a really strong focus on licenses and legal stuff, does package it directly as Seamonkey. And as far as i know, you only would need to disable the switch --with-branding during build if you do modifications on Seamonkey if you want to be able to redistribute it, the same as for Firefox.

I would prefer to see the SeaMonkey brand used:
- it gives credit to the volunteers who keep SeaMonkey alive
- the rebranding is in any case incomplete (see the Help menu for an example)
- the IceApe logo is plain ugly!
Can this suggestion be passed on to whoever is responsible for this decision?

The differencies between IceCat and Firefox, I don't know them, but according to this (unfortunately) french video :

Firefox doesn't appear clean anymore for my eyes.

The things of Firefox explained on this video :
firefox load by default google as search engine, with the last version it isn't possible anymore to desactivate the search function on the address bar, so it uses google by default and search while typping.
Load "most used website" by default.
On a new tab, it suggests this websites, it make a DNS request for all the "most used website" from the new tab (network.dns.disablePrefetch false by default)
the "addon page" uses GoogleAnalytics, and it is not disabled by all extentions (ublock, umatrix ...) (but by activating "do not track")
The part "Pocket" is not free.
"Sponsorised content" in Pocket.
Try "cliqz" in Germany, transform the "search barre" by a "recommandation barre" and the aim is to publish sponsorised content.
Try "DNS-over-HTTPS" (does-it by-pass the local /etc/hosts file ? which restricts some DN on my side), and their partner for the DNS over HTTPS is CloudFlare, I don't know if it is configurable.
