Feature Request: Enabling swap on Zram "by default"

Postby JY » Apr 17th, '22, 16:46

ISSUE: WITHOUT A DEFAULT "SWAP ON ZRAM", LIVE-USB OF Mageia IS MORE HARD TO USE (NO SWAP), AND SLOWER ON LOW RAM SYSTHEMS AFTER INSTALL (SWAP ON DISK INSTEAD OF THE FASTER RAM)

SUGGESTION: There is a shift towards default " swap on zram " on many serious linux distributions these days: Fedora, EndlessOs, Calculate-Linux, AltLinux...
There are various benefits for the company or home user.
Mostly the system is much more reactive whenever starting to swap (swap on zram being much more reactive than swap on hdd or ssd).

What about joining the move, and enabling swap on zram " by default " in Mageia, like Calculate, Endless, Fedora, Alt...?
It would be very helpful for the typical case of home users who have small RAM amounts available and experience regular swapping.

Feature request should better be posted in our bugzilla, but yes it may good to discuss them here or on a mail list first.

Related: It is possible to have swap on live system:

as partition or as file

- Which reminds me I should finish writing that page...

FWIW, it should probably be put in the wiki as a feature request: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Features_policy

Hi all,

There is a very good page of swap tuning advice in a wiki page that is aimed at Ubuntu/Mint but surely the commands would work for Mageia. ?? I have not used the command line much in the past with opensuse/Mandriva/Mageia but have done so a fair amount with Mint. Are the commands that are not 'apt' based also good for Mageia?

I will include a link to the page I mention: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... -mint.html

It takes particular care to adjust for the amount of ram in the system and my older, slower computers benefited from the settings being changed. The quad core i7 with 16gb RAM system must have had some benefit but it runs fast enough I could not tell the difference. They also have a good page for tuning a system with SSD that I used as my X1 Carbon ultrabooks both have SSD inside and I am converting the W530 to SSD next week when the new drive arrives.

Perhaps this is useful?

Cheers

Hi all,

Well, disappoinment... I tried to use some of the commands and only some work. I need to dig into mageia file structure and see where some of the corresponding files are located it seems to figure out where to link to get the commands to function. That won't be today clearly.

Cheers

You are very welcome to make a similar wiki page for Mageia :)

Is there any chance default zram could ship with M9?

Even big and well known distributions like openSUSE denied the request to enable zram by default, because it has disadvantages on most well equipped systems and it is only usefull for a handfull of users. And writing with caps-lock on and yelling "all the others are doing it" without doing a base research doesn't make your point valid in any way.

Mageia already provides the needed packages to enable zram if a user wants it. But forcing tools down the throat of all users with heavy side effects is never a good decission.

If you want to enable zram on Mageia you should use the softwarecenter and install the relevant packages and make your configuration. Easy like that. No need to force it down upon all users...

Hi!
Thank you for the detailled answer!
Im sorry if all caps sounded like yelling, i guess i am not used to forums. I just
wanted to 'separate' the issue from rest of message.
