[SOLVED] Suggestion for Synaptic installed by default

Postby schnappi » Apr 18th, '20, 03:11

Hello,

On my laptop with xfce, double tap on trackpad doesnt work. I had to manually install it.
Would be great if its installed by default.

Are you referring to x11-driver-input-synaptics ? That should not be necessary, as there are usually libinput rules for that.
Did you try to change the setting for that in XFCE control center beforehand?

Also, can you add the relevant section for your trackpad from
Code: Select all
cat /proc/bus/input/devices

and as root from
Code: Select all
/usr/libexec/libinput/libinput-list-devices

edit: FWIW, x11-driver-input-synaptics is not installed anymore since 2016, since this should all be covered by libinput.

Why should it be there?

You didn't answer a question about some basic context information that would be necessary to troubleshoot why this is not working with libinput, and neither anything about the actual hardware you're running.

I uninstalled synaptic.
Nothing unusual in xfce setttings.
But then I found that I need to triple tap the trackpad for it to work as double tap. For eg: to select a word in some docu or on web, triple tap trackpad. Now the word is selected.

The solution is that there is no solution found till now. I will need to triple tap on laptop touchpad to simulate mouse double click. I am giving up on trying to find a solution. Outputs as requested previously:

You mentioned a touchpad, but this output is from running inside a virtualbox VM - that doesn't have access to your physical touchpad, and you don't have access to specific settings for the touchpad.
You need to run that on the virtualbox host.

Also this thread is slightly confusing. First you mention you installed synaptic, which fixed double tap on your trackpad. Then later you uninstalled synaptic, for whatever reason. Then that there's no solution. Which is it now?

1. OOTB no synaptic >
I place the mouse pointer using touchpad on some text. Later i try to double tap and select. It doesnt work

2. Googling took me to some article that explained that one needs to install synaptic. So I install synaptic

3. Now synaptic is installed and eager to test, I place the mouse pointer using touchpad on some text. Immediately i double tap and the text is selected. (Eager is the schwerpunkt here)

4. So now I think that synaptic fixed the issue for me and I post here to include this double tap synaptic fix.

5. In the course of the discussion on this topic, for test purpose, I remove synaptic.

6. Eager to test, I place the mouse pointer using touchpad on some text. Immediately i double tap and the text is selected.

7. This is quite strange, so further tests are needed. Now I find that placing the mouse pointer using touchpad on some text & Immediately double tapping, the text is selected.
But if I place the mouse pointer using touchpad on some text & wait for couple of seconds and then double tap, the text is not selected.

8. This behaviour is seen with or without synaptic.

Thus the conclusion (with or without synaptic) is that :
- place the mouse pointer using touchpad on some text & wait for couple of seconds and then double tap, the text is not selected.
- place the mouse pointer using touchpad on some text & then immediately double tap, the text is selected.

As you seem to have ignored the other half, posting it again:

Installing Mageia on actual physical laptop as vm host is not possible for me. Mageia on vm is my personal laptop.
For me it was a simple fact that physical usb mouse double click works in vm. But if I use touchpad, then I need to triple tap.
Anyways, for me, there doesnt seem to be any solution for this "mouse double click works, but need triple tap on touchpad". Hence "Solved" (more like given-up).

Finally found actual fix. I increased the default double click time to about 1 sec. So now double click selects word. And triple click selects sentence.
