What about folders to store softwares

Postby samp » Apr 9th, '16, 23:16

Hi,

I have noticed that all operating systems have a long list of softwares

Linux with gnome, IOS, Android, they all list their softwares the same way

they all list their software pages by pages.

Except with android, I have found a software that sort all the softwares by folders so, instead of having pages and pages again, all the softwares are listed in a single page in different folders: Internet, Office, Multimedia, etc...

I think it would be a great idea for the future of gnome, the ability to sort the softwares by our own folders.

What do you think of that?
and how to send it to those concerned?

Thanks.
Sam.

Those "folders" are called categories and listed on the left-hand panel in http://doc.mageia.org/mcc/5/en/content/ ... html#d4e65 (section 6 in the screenshot).

I wonder if there is a way to sort with categories in the activity view?

If it's the main menu that you are referring to, then Mageia has many options (Desktop environments) that provide a menu in the style that you want, such as "Gnome classical" or KDE

You can also install an extension under gnome3 to use the classic menu that display applications in categories: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/ ... ions-menu/
If you want to send it to those concerned, complain to gnome upstream - although they won't listen, as gnome is always right, and the users are always wrong.

It's not about the classical Gnome I am referring to but this one :

There is no taskbar, only one "activity" button on the top left that display the open windows or the list of the softwares

all in simplicity and efficiency.

This is in this screen that I would see folders

Please read again, what was replied to you: The normal gnome menu of gnome 3 is the thing on your screenshot, and gnome developers assume this is the best way to present the default menu to the user. If you don't like that, either complain to the gnome guys upstream, or simply use a different menu. The classical gnome menu is still being offered, see my previous post.

This menu is very good, I don't want to change it
I would like to keep the menu on the left
but I would like to add a folder feature to the software page.
