Update kodi-inputstream-adaptive for Kodi 19 please

Postby BIKO84 » Sep 6th, '21, 23:20

Dear fellow developers, please update the kodi-inputstream-adaptive file on mageia. At the moment there is only version 2.4.4 available, which is for kodi 18. You are offering kodi 19, but this file is not working on it. This file is needed for watching a whole bunch of streams in kodi. Please update it. Thank you so much!

Hi there, this is the wrong place. You should open an update request in bugzilla, have a look at https://wiki.mageia.org/en/How_to_report_a_bug_properly

I am quite happy to file a bug report, but thougt that I should obtain confirmation here first. The RPM for kodi 19.4 contains InputStream Adaptive about version 0.6.0. This is very old. The plugin is just that, a plugin. It doesn't seem to have been updated for the new version. Its status on the Kodi site is quite confusing: they tell you how to update it as a plugin, then tell you that it isn't among the plugins any more. And since they know only Ubuntu, they won't help anyone using other distros.

I tried to uninstall the plugin and reinstall the latest version, but the program wouldn't let me. I have a working version of 19.4 on a USB stick. With fingers crossed, I copied across two folders, inputstream.adaptive and inputstream.adaptive.testing. This seems to have fixed the problem, and introduced no problems of its own.

There is no single Kodi add-on provided or distributed by Mageia. kodi-inputstream-adaptive was never provided by Mageia. You installed it on your own. All Kodi add-ons are handled and downloaded via the internal Kodi Add-on browser. The Kodi documentation describes that these add-ons are distributed via Kodi add-on repositories.
For Kodi 19 (codename "Matrix") this addon is no longer available in the official kodi repository (the page which says it is available for Kodi wasn't updated since 2018 so it is outdated). You can see that kodi-inputstream-adaptive is not available for Kodi 19.4 https://github.com/xbmc/inputstream.adaptive/releases.

Read the provided links for further information.

Kodi tells you what to to in such case on this page: https://kodi.wiki/view/Add-on_manager#How_to_install_from_a_ZIP_file
Note: If you have issues with the add-on installing or after installing it does not work as intended, you will need to contact the Add-on Author.

And there are already two bugreports at our bugzilla for this case (both invalid imho because of the reasons above).

This is not correct. If you check the file list, some addons are bundled with our regular kodi package under /usr/share/kodi/addons/: http://sophie.zarb.org/rpms/d4dcf56ce25 ... 27ba/files

The difference of opinion here shows just how confusing the status of this add-on is. No, there is no single add-on distributed by Mageia as Ubuntu does (sometimes,) but most of the time, Kodi's own machinery will work. I was surprised that the add-on was on my USB stick when it wasn't available from the add-on repo.

Re: Being unable to uninstall: I believe that I could have uninstalled this add-on if I had uninstalled two other add-ons that depended on it. One of them was Crackle. I am not sure if I could have reinstalled this add-on without conflict, just by installing a ZIP file over the top of what was there. (Although that is basically what I did, I bypassed the normal machinery. What ZIP file? The add-on is on GIT, and I suppose that I could have downloaded it in ZIP format.

Anyway, I have raised the issue. Releasing Kodi with Python 3 to the public without giving developers a chance to upgrade their add-ons first, must have confused a lot of end users, many of whom are not techies. For such a popular program, I believe that the service should be better.

If there is a place to just get it would be great.
