[SOLVED] FileRunner

Postby annhenrie » Jun 10th, '12, 04:49

Why fix what wasn't broke? FileRunner 2.5 has been a standby -- fast, dependable. Mageia 2 repositories include FileRunner 10 which is peculiar and not at all useable. (Turns out the problem was an older version in the mga2 rpm. Fixed the problems by using a fresh tarball from SourceForge. Mga2 rpm may be updated by now.) It is possible to install the mga 1 rpm which is a necessary defense against the mga 2 rpm. (Installing the mga1 rpm -- not such a good idea.)

Mind to tell what exactly is peculiar and why exactly it's not useable and list some issues? Otherwise there wasn't really a choice, as GNOME2 is deprecated upstream and not maintained anymore, we had to switch due to lack of maintainers and resources.

I have removed the FR 10, so I can't recapture the "bad" behavior. It kept automatically going to an editor (a Windows editor!) when all I wanted to do was to browse directories and read files. Whenenever I clicked on it, "helpful" screens would pop up and get in the way. FR hasn't been maintained for years, but still works. The mga1 packages work fine in mga2, so that's what I'm using. No need to repackage. I've been using fr in since Mandrake 7 or so. The only problems I've ever had have been that occasionally the tk libraries weren't automatically picked up by urpmi. Probably the tarball would work. I use KDE, not gnome, so a lack of gnome support should not be an issue.

Thanks.

Okay, so I'm adjusting to the new version of fr. It's still better than any other fm. Still wish it hadn't been changed. Or that the shared library (tk) was backward compatible so I could stick with fr 2.5.1.

Care to mark the thread as [SOLVED] then, please? Only sad that there is/can't be no real solution :/
