Support of Monkey's Audio Codec in Mageia 1 Repository

Postby CharlieBros » Nov 5th, '11, 07:14

Hi!

I had to go trough an odyssey to convert my APE music files to FLAC, because Clementine doesn't support APE, and unfortunately Monkey's Audio Codec (MAC) are not open-source,
Searching the codec I discovered that the codec are only available in Cauldron Repository and that are not so comfortable for me, because if i want a stable system I cannot use Cauldron so I need to compile some dependencies, download another ones and pfff, you know, a total mess.

Also I sugest support gCue2Tracks, It's a very useful application for me, because I download music (lossless) and some times are only 2 files, one audio file (FLAC, APE, Wav, etc) and a .cue so I need to cut in separated tracks, so I need this application because I don't like to use Command Line Programs, are problematic (for me) and well, I prefer the easy way :)

I don't know if somebody read this suggest and I think that my suggest will be ignored but, well, at least I try :D

Regards

Please, package requests don't belong in the forums, please file them in bugzilla:
https://bugs.mageia.org/enter_bug.cgi?p ... mat=guided and select "New RPM package request"
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

Fedora rpm for mac codec works in Mageia 1.
I hope a Mageia rpm will be soon packaged.

As for a program for splitting to individual tracks a single audio file with a cue sheet:
If you 're using Gnome, you can download the .all.deb package of gcue2tracks, and convert it in an rpm package with "alien" (command line tool, easy to use and it's in the Mageia 1 repos).
I tested it sometime ago (gcue2tracks) and it worked in Mageia 1 (even in KDE).

But if you're using KDE, I strongly suggest you use Flacon.
It works perfectly, faster than gcue2tracks and with much better sounding results.
It's in the Mageia Cauldron repos, but you can install it in Mageia 1, without any problem. It works really nice in my Mageia 1 64bit KDE.
Click one of the links bellow to download it:
32bit: ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/linux/Mageia/distrib/cauldron/i586/media/core/release/flacon-0.5.7-1.mga2.i586.rpm
64bit: ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/linux/Mageia/distrib/cauldron/x86_64/media/core/release/flacon-0.5.7-1.mga2.x86_64.rpm
There's also a dependency for Flacon, that you must install first: shntool. The package is also available in Cauldron repos:
32bit: ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/linux/Mageia/distrib/cauldron/i586/media/core/release/shntool-3.0.10-1.mga2.i586.rpm
64bit: ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/linux/Mageia/distrib/cauldron/x86_64/media/core/release/shntool-3.0.10-1.mga2.x86_64.rpm

By the way... I don't remember if Clementine does support mac (I don't have a mac audio file handy right now, to test it ), but audacious certainly supports it.
And you don't have to split the file in individual tracks. Just load the cue sheet as a playing list.

Just tested it: Clementine can play ape files.
It requires that the mac codec is installed in the system (same requirement for audacious, also).
As with Audacious, Clementine can load the cue sheet as a playing list, you don't have to split the single audio file in tracks.

A lot of thanks my sir, I was searching a sustitute of gCue2Tracks and Flacon was great, I need to split mi files because I need to convert to MP3 to play with my Archos Jukebox Recorder 20 and even with Rockbox it's not possible read .cue.

About Clementine, it's not possible for me use .APE because Clementine don't read my tags and I like to have my music library organized but thanks anyway.

I dont like Winamp and Audacious.
