No sound with AC3 optical pass through using a52

Following the instructions here: http://colin.guthr.ie/2010/12/bobby-dig ... -surround/ (which I found a link to in this forum) I can now select 5.1 channel output in KDE systemsettings however it doesn't seem to work. If I then reboot I still have no sound however DolbyDigital light up on the surround amp when a sound is playing.
Playing a 5.1 test ogg in mplayer results in the following.
I also get this if I run systemsettings from konsole and click on the speaker test buttons - but only after trying mplayer - if I try it first there is no error, both times no sound but the Dolbydigital indicator lights on the amp.
The forum post that gave me the link was several years old so am I just following old advice?
The amp works since the digital stereo output works and also it has a built in DVD player which works too.
