Automute speakers on plugging in headphones

Automute speakers on plugging in headphones

Postby Dougal » Oct 4th, '14, 09:57

Until recently my system was by default set up so that speakers would automute as soon as i plugged in my headphones. Some recent update seems to have changed this behaviour. Now when plugging in headphones i get sound on the headphones and the speakers simultaneously.

The standard response to this problem seems to be to set automute to "Enabled" in alsamixer. However alsamixer on Mageia doesn't seem to offer this option.

I also tried
Code: Select all
/usr/bin/amixer -c 0 sset "Auto-Mute Mode" Enabled

which returns
Code: Select all
amixer: Unable to find simple control 'Auto-Mute Mode',0

Does anybody have other ideas or suggestions?

Can you please post the output of
Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v | grep -i audio
grep -i codec /proc/asound/card*/codec*
pactl list cards

Also check the previous thread about this:

I had a look at the threads you linked to, but i'm not quite sure what actions to derive from them. Choosing the headphones port in the Audio Hardware Setup of the KDE system settings did not do the trick. Also as i wrote, very confusing that this worked until a couple of months ago (haven't used my headphones in a while) and now suddenly it doesn't anymore.

What kernel do you use currently? Please show output of
Code: Select all
uname -r

Do you still have any of the older 3.12.x kernels installed, then please test them compared to current 3.14.18.

Also please show the output of
Code: Select all
grep -R hda /etc/modprobe*
pacmd list-sinks

Code: Select all
uname -r

3.14.18-desktop-3.mga4

Actually my suspicion is that this stopped working due to the latest kernel update...

Code: Select all
grep -R hda /etc/modprobe*

produces no output..

Code: Select all
pacmd list-sinks

And you say that currently you hear output to builtin speakers and via headphones?

Also, please mention which desktop environment you're using currently.

No, i'm hearing the output of external speakers (not internal speakers) and headphones at the same time. The behaviour i used to experience was that by plugging in the headphones, the external speakers attached to the line out would mute.

I am using KDE.

Ahh, so you have separate jacks for headphones and line-out? Okay.

Can you please take a screenshot in systemsettings -> multimedia -> audio and video settings -> audi hardware setup (also accessible via rightclick on kmix -> audio setup) and then switch the card to your analog card.

And by the way, switching the connector between 'Headphones' and 'Line Out' (the only other option) doesn't change anything. Under both options both the external speakers and the headphones receive sounnbd...

Hmmm, seems the mixer control "Auto-Mute Mode" has been removed.

Re: Automute speakers on plugging in headphones

Yes indeed, so it seems. The question remains, is there any relatively easy way of (re-)enabling automute, short of replacing the alsamixer version from the Mageia repository by one that i would have to compile myself....?

The problem is not alsamixer, the problem is that the driver/codec doesn't expose this mixer channel anymore.

You could check the following, though, at least to see if it works: http://digitizor.com/2009/10/22/fix-hea ... top-linux/

Other proposal would be http://voices.canonical.com/david.henni ... hone-jack/
You can get hda-jack-retask from http://packages.ubuntu.com/utopic/alsa-tools-gui
