Help with X-FI Xtrememusic sound card

Postby bugreg » May 19th, '14, 22:48

Hi
Just installed Magiea 4 and was hoping someone here might be able to help with getting an X-FI Xtrememusic sound card working. I downloaded the software from Creative's site 'XFiDrv_Linux_Public_US_1.00.tar.gz' but haven't got a clue how to go about installing it.

There is a readme file in the folder which states:

Code: Select all
  Sound Blaster X-Fi Linux 32/64-bit Driver Source Release Readme File
  September 2008

====================================================================

The purpose of this document is to describe how to build and install the
X-Fi Linux device driver.

 Quick install

=============
In terminal,

1) Goto source directory
2) Execute make command as root
   make
   make install

Uninstall
=========
In terminal,
1) Goto source directory
2) Execute make command as root
   make uninstall

Any help much appreciated.

Hi

make a new folder in a place you need / can find later. locate the file that you downloaded and move it into the new folder. open the folder
Right click the file and choose : extract archive here, auto detect subfolder
from the file manager menu bar choose : ' tools ' - open terminal
at the terminal prompt type "su "- [ adminstrator or sometimes called super-user ]
at the password prompt type your root or administrater password - no characters are displayed
the prompt line will now have "root " at the start of it.
now type : make
wait a while
and then type: make install.

hopefully everything should just do its thing and you can set up and configure your sound card through Mageia Control Centre
if there are any errors please put them here.

regards

I'd not recommend installing that ages-old proprietary driver. The kernel should bring the correct driver for this card out of the box, the driver is called snd-ctxfi according to https://wiki.debian.org/X-Fi

Code: Select all
[doktor5000@Mageia4 ~]$ sudo modinfo snd-ctxfi

Thanks for the input.

Have been trying all sorts in the audio settings and managed to get sound working in Amorok. Haven't installed anything. The card was recognised all along in PulseAudio and the visual blue slider was responding to audio being played, just no sound. Now I can hear as well as see. :-)

Changed too many settings to know what I did to solve this. If I install the OS again, I'll try and enumerate any changes I make, then update this thread.

Cheers
