No sound after upgrade M3 to M4

No sound after upgrade M3 to M4

Postby mackowiakp » Feb 4th, '14, 12:15

just upgraded M3 to M4 using console urpmi procedure as described in WIKI. Now there is no sound but KMix shows proper mixer content, sound configuration in MCC looks the same way like in M3 (snd_hda_intel) and hardware listing in MCC shows existence of MCP73 HD Audio card. Microphone input works because I can measure loudness and input volume in Skype test page. Bout the silence is in loudspeakers of connected monitor.
Any idea what I have to do?

again bit of guess work.

but start by opening pulse control and seeing what is selected as default output.

ive seen between various releases of mageia and mandriva, the defaults for some cards getting set to digital

out when people are using analog out.

so make sure the default has selected the output you are using.

What default channel is selected in kmix? Right-click -> select main channel.
Can you hear sound when testing in systemsettings? Right-click on kmix -> audio setup -> select your sound card on thee right side and click test button.
Also click on the setup audio hardware tab, select your soundcard at the top, and in the bottom you will get test buttons for left and right speakers (or more for multichannel)

Pay attention which profile is selected directly below the soundcard at the top.

Also, can you play sounds using paplay? E.g.
Code: Select all
paplay /usr/share/sounds/KDE-Sys-Log-In.ogg

Yep. Deault output is set to "Headphones" not to "Analog Line". I changed it and sound is playable. But after reboot the default output is back to "Headphones". Of course I clicked on "Apply" button. Any reason why system does not remember settings?

Where did you change the default exactly?

Not sure, might be a KDE bug - best ask in their forums and report a bug upstream - I cannot reproduce here.
But that might also be because in my case headphone is the same output as analog line-out.

Any workaround? My PC board has several analog and digital outputs. Optical, line-out, headphones, audio over HDMI. Is any possibility to use command line at KDE startup to switch default output to "line-out"?

i had the same problem a few revs back with audigy always defaulting to
digital when i used analog

i used

and i have to ask you to take my hints and find the rest as its history for me now

but alsactl save and restore comes to mind

obviously a save when its working and a restore when you start via rc.local.

not sure if it applies in your case but worth a punt

Has anyone figured this out?
I've been having problem with phonon settings defaulting to my video card HDMI output.

edit:
Got it working :)
I tried a different output jack and it seems to detect just fine.

At this moment I got sound working except Audio over HDMI. Simply, I downloaded source code of Linux audio driver from Asus website (my mainboard is manufactured by Asus). But still HDMI Audio is not supported by Linux driver but it works under Windows (using Asus Windows driver of course). So as I understand from mailing with Asus Support, it is specific hardware related problem and it is not planned to improve Linux driver functionality for type of motherboard I have.
Asus advice me to buy new one. Thank You very much Asus! VERY good advice :D
