Would give it a shot gstreamer's ugly plugins are missing.

I installed this
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly - GStreamer Streaming-media framework plug-ins
both the 1.mga.1 & the 2.mga1.tainted
versions no go

There are two packages you could maybe need, that would be gstreamer0.10-decoders and gstreamer0.10-audio, but don't know the exact names ATM.

Just made the test:

1. Installed Clementine (64-bit)
2. Opened Clementine, added my music repo
3. played one of the mp3 files, success.

I already installed Amarok earlier and it worked, so I already had all the gstreamer files on board:
Code: Select all
$ rpm -qa|grep gstreamer
gstreamer0.10-speex-0.10.28-1.mga1
gstreamer0.10-python-0.10.21-2.mga1
phonon-gstreamer-4.5.1-0.mga1
gstreamer0.10-plugins-base-0.10.32-3.mga1
lib64gstreamer-plugins-base0.10-0.10.32-3.mga1
lib64gstreamer0.10_0.10-0.10.32-1.mga1
gstreamer0.10-farsight2-0.0.26-2.mga1
gstreamer0.10-cdparanoia-0.10.32-3.mga1
packagekit-gstreamer-plugin-0.6.13-3.mga1
gstreamer0.10-soup-0.10.28-1.mga1
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg-0.10.11-3.mga1
gstreamer0.10-tools-0.10.32-1.mga1
gstreamer0.10-plugins-good-0.10.28-1.mga1
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-0.10.21-3.mga1.tainted
gstreamer0.10-flac-0.10.28-1.mga1
gstreamer0.10-voip-0.10.21-3.mga1.tainted
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-0.10.17-2.mga1.tainted
gstreamer0.10-gnomevfs-0.10.32-3.mga1
gstreamer0.10-pulse-0.10.28-1.mga1

What's the codec of that file? what's the extension?

To see which codec is needed, try starting clementine from terminal and post the gstreamer messages when you try playing the file.

Alternatively, try playing the file with mplayer from terminal (install mplayer, if it's not already installed):
mplayer /path/to/file

and post the output here.

I went back & tried different searches
when I left off the end of the description I found the missing package
phonon-gstreamer
works fine now
so how do we fix it for everyone else?

Well, then you should open up a bug report and provide this information.
So a Requires: phonon-gstreamer should be added to clementine, after the maintainer checked if this is valid.
You can report the bug at http://bugs.mageia.org/

Ahmad answered there and asked for information (gave some commands you should do and post the output).

As a general information:
Reporting a bug is not the end of it, It's the start of an action where the "reporter" is involved. So everybody who reports a bug should keep an eye on it (he'll get a notification by mail anyway) and be as responsive as possible - the better is the chance to get the bug fixed soon.

I haven't sat down at the pc that has Mageia installed on it yet [I'm on my notebook, sitting on the deck watching my wife give our horse a lesson]
it is on my to do list [the bug notification is in my Magiea folder]
thanks for the reminder :D

Better than any other combination, like "sitting on the horse watching my notebook give my wife a lesson" (I won't go into other options).

I guess many options could be OK except "watching the horse sitting on my net-book..." :o

Check it often. Devs will usually want more information and sometimes will ask you to try a fix.

Oh I'm having a blast
One of the aspects of a distro that's important to me is the community
I can give as good as I get, so banter is fine
had a few exchanges with the bug guys assigned to this bit o fun
looks like it's on the run
