Audio Stutter

Hello,

I am having an issue when playing audio at louder volumes, anything around 80% stutters and is not enjoyable.

I don't know much about audio so I have posted a screenshot below to show my hardware. I am not sure what the NVIDIA soundcard is.



Please let me know what other information you need.

The nvidia is for the HDMI output for the graphics card.

So you mean anything below 80% volume sounds normally, and if you raise the volume higher, it stutters?
What application do you use to play what sound? Or does it happen with all of them?

Also, what Mageia version do you use and what desktop?

I had the same issue with Mageia 2 and my onboard sound card. Check this bug https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6075#c7 where I 've written a working solution for me.
I faced the same problem when I upgraded my Mageia 3 installation to Cauldron but I couldn't solve it. Luckily, I had a spare audigy SE which works fine.
Unfortunately I've run into various sound problems with linux through the years. The lack of official drivers is a problem sometimes.

That is correct, anything higher stutters.

What application do you use to play what sound? Or does it happen with all of them?

I use Amarok but this happens using any application including games and youtube videos.

Also, what Mageia version do you use and what desktop?

I am using Mageia 3 running KDE.

I will take alook at this, it may just be a driver issue like you said.

yes i had same problem with the onboard sound chip on my asus crosshair V formula

this came with SupremeFX X-Fi 2 sound card onboard.

mainly in VLC

i like dtsiamasiotis fitted a cheap audigy off ebay, and fixed the problem.

I should like to make an observation here. The complaint was made that audio output "stutters" at levels above 80%.

In general, it is not a good idea to drive audio devices at full volume. This applies to all audio devices. The best results in terms of sound quality are always achieved when one keeps levels at around 50% or even lower. If you need louder volume, get more powerful amplification. The best sound quality is achieved by using powerful equipment at lower levels.

Driving low powered audio equipment at full volume just produces crappy sound quality and burns out the speakers and always leads to square wave distortion.
