No microphone input in Skype w/ ALSA

No microphone input in Skype w/ ALSA

Postby fox » Dec 28th, '13, 17:23

Hello Mageia fans, I have a strange problem with Skype when using Alsa. With Pulse Audio everything is fine and can make a conversation. When I disable Pulse Audio and use Alsa, my partners can't hear me. The mic is working fine and I can hear myself through my speakers or headphones, I can record in Audacity from the mic, but Skype can't use it. I've read similar threads but none I found is the same.

Appreciate any help, thanks.

Well, why and how do you disable alsa?

I didn't disable Alsa, I disables Pulse Audio from MCC.

I disable it because I use some audio programs like MuseScore and Audacity which work with alsa. And I have control over audio ports volumes and can set them for input and output in audacity.

Ahh, sorry for the typo.

Audacity works fine with Pulseaudio, also volume setting. You may need to select the right input device, and can then change the volume inside audacity.
Why do you need to disable Pulse for that? Hint: for some soundcards that don't support 44100Hz sampling natively, you may need
to set the sampling rate (bottom left corner for the project or in Settings) to 48000Hz to be able to record.

Yes, thanks for the tip. I may play with it. But anyway Musescore cannot work with pulse, neither playback nor the midi input which I use sometimes. And I couldn't get sound through the line in with pulse, tried it from the PA volume control, it detects a connection but still no sound. Maybe I'll try it again soon. So any chance for skype?

OK, I found a partial solution by connecting the mic to the other PCI sound card and it worked. Strange that in the internal card it works fine except for skype. For now it's good, maybe it doesn't need more bothering.

Thank you very much for your time. Appreciate it.
And happy holidays :)

Well, you may also disable pulseaudio while running programs not supported bei pulsaudio.

Code: Select all
man pasuspender
for windows problems reboot; for linux problems be root
