have you checked configuration, output devices and levels in

menu->sound-> pulseaudio volume control?

I did try the easy stuff
I have 2 of these PC's nearly identical
the other one uses the onboard sound chip
this one was missing the aux audiojacks, so no jumper for the headphones
I just plugged in a sound card
which was never a problem on Mageia1, just worked

MCC->hardware->soundcard should report

Vendor ID
Device ID
Driver Module

and should also have a 'run config tool' option.
could you post these values?

Code: Select all
Here you can select an alternative driver (either OSS or ALSA) for your sound card (Ensoniq|ES1371 [AudioPCI-97]).

Your card currently uses the ALSA "snd_ens1371" driver (the default driver for your card is "snd_ens1371")

tryed a different card same result
did a clean install of Mageia1, sound works on both sound cards
burned a dual arch cd, but I don't have time to sort out how lxde works, when I choose kde, I could only boot to CLI
did another clean install of mageia2 kde
configured media sources
no sound

That's hardly surprising as the Dual CD doesn't have KDE on it.
It does use the same installer as the DVD which gives you a choice of desktop environments but if you uncheck LXDE you have no Desktop installed even if you choose KDE or any other.

Why is it called dual arch not LXDE?

Because from the dualarch you can install a minimal install of i586 and x86_64, both from one CD. No other media offers that, so it's called dualarch (dual architecture).

recap
hp dc5000, using external sound card
no sound on mageia2 kde
sound on mageia 2 gnome
both use the same driver

where would I find sound test on kde?
is it possible to uninstall/reinstall the sound card driver?
