I went through the list of Gstreamer items
I don't see anything that fits the description [the bad & ugly are there]
I installed Clem before enabling tainted
I have nonfree & tainted enabled now
I tried to uninstall & reinstalled Clem [didn't delete the clem db files]

By any chance, do you have gstreamer0.10-decoders and gstreamer0.10-decoders-audio installed?

If that is the case, try to quit clementine and remove ~/.gstreamer-0.10/ folder (inside your home directory, not as root!)

I experienced similar problems with Clementime. Also Rhythmbox occasionally lost sound.

Uninstalled both and installed Exaile which at present is working perfectly.

amarok does play, I don't really want to spend enough time to figure out how to use it

I have used Exaile in the past, not bad

I guess I'll take it up with the devs on Clem
I have clem version 0.7 working well on a couple of M1 machines
I'm hoping to have Playlists be portable between all 3 & at least see if Clem version 1 works with my devices

Sorry, but if im posting something that might help you with your problem, and you don't follow this even after i repeat it, i'm afraid i can't help you any further.
No need to take this up with the devs of clementine, as it is a local problem to your installation. Clementine is working fine here on Mageia 1 & 2.

Well, I did what I understood you told me to, which yielded no different results
I do the best I can
I suppose not being able to read your mind I didn't do it right

Well, what does that have to do with reading ones mind? I just suggested toyou to remove a folder, and then start clementine again.
You didn't mention anywhere that you tried this and that it didn't work. How is that so hard?

May i ask how exactly you tried to remove it?

here
viewtopic.php?f=26&t=2968&p=22498#p22435
I also included a screen shot of some of the gstreamer decoders you mentioned [you left out any context for the comments?]

to remove the files
I quit clem
I opened dolphin
changed the view so I could see the hidden files
set them to the trash
restarted clem
as I wrote on the post I linked to
same error

Can you try to run clementine under a freshly created user, or maybe xguest?

I can't seem to access any files to populate the library as xguest
I have an external HDD with a backup copy too [equally inaccessible]

So please try to create a new user via MCC and try with that one, does the problem still persist?

won the battle
lost the war
I can create a user, but can't connect it to any of the files

further
when I try to use the ex hdd as home
I get an error
can't enter home directory using /

when creating a new user
since I can't browse to find which directory I would like home to be [exhdd]
I am probably not doing it right [I don't speak terminal]
I tried probably 10 different combinations

I can see the exhdd when I loginto guest
but it doesn't show up on clem under root/media as would be expected

thanks for the tips Dok [though I wouldn't mind understanding how to get the other users to be able to share some of the home folder]
I tried a bunch of variations
here is what finally worked

removed the
config for clem
gstreamer files
uninstalled clem
restarted computer
reinstalled clem
success
:D

This is what made it work, as reinstalling or rebooting doesn't change much there.

nope
tried all that 1st
steps
1] turned off clem, sent gstreamer 10 file [gsf] to the trash, restarted clem

2]turned off clem, uninstall clem, sent gstreamer 10 file [gsf] to the trash, reinstall clem, restarted clem

3]turned off clem, uninstall clem, remove clem config, sent gstreamer 10 file [gsf] to the trash, reinstall clem, restarted clem

4]turned off clem, uninstall clem, remove clem config, sent gstreamer 10 file [gsf] to the trash, restart notebook, reinstall clem, restarted clem

listen to music, build playlist, copy to sd card,
listen to music while using tractor to move rocks

I took the little side journey as you suggested, trying to use a different user, but I never did figure out how to connect the new user to home in such a way clem could use to populate the library there

sorry my experience doesn't meet your expectations, I'll try harder in the future :(

Well, no need to try harder for me. If it works the way you solved, just be happy and spread the word. All's fine :D
