Again: no sound after installation

Again: no sound after installation

Postby wobo » Jan 3rd, '12, 20:19

System is Mageia 1 (i586), Icewm-light.

In former installations of Mageia 1 I had sound all right, no problems. Now I don't. I checked the forum posts but found no solution.

1. lspci says: Intel N10/ICH, Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel, Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel
harddrake in MCC says the same

2. lsmod shows snd and snd-hda-intel as present

3. PA is installed and activated in MCC

4. PS volume control says: Dummy device - it does not recognize the sound chip. Dummy output is on 100%

5. alsamixer is installed and says: Master is on 100%, Card: Pulseaudio, Chip: Pulseaudio - no other channels available

At the moment I have no clue.

Does Alsa recognize your soundcard?
That means - can you switch via F6 in Alsamixer between Pulse(Standard) and your soundcard?

If not - deactivate Pulse and restart. Does Alsamixer now recognize your card (and do you have working sound now?)

If not - seems to be a problem with the card or drivers ...

If Alsamixer identifies your card (you can switch with F6...):
Had the same symptoms with Cauldron a few weeks ago, udev (device permissions?) was the reason ...

hope I could help ...
cheers,
Bernd

There's a shortcut for that, just do
Code: Select all
pasuspender bash
and you have a terminal where PA is completely disabled, afterwards
try maybe something like
Code: Select all
aplay -D hw:0 /usr/share/sounds/pop.wav

which uses plain alsa.

No

If not - deactivate Pulse and restart. Does Alsamixer now recognize your card (and do you have working sound now?)
alsamixer now recognizes the card but no sound (I checked all volumes)

Code: Select all
$ aplay -D hw:0 /usr/share/sounds/pop.wav
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1401:(_snd_pcm_hw_open) Invalid value for card
aplay: main:: audio open error: file or folder not found

There seems to be a problem with the driver. As I already stated I had sound in a previous installation of Mageia 1. So, this time I did a minimal installation and there's probably something missing which was installed in a previous full installation. The task now is to find this 'something'.

Please show the output of lspcidrake -v

lspcidrake tells almost the same as I already wrote (using lspci):
Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v | grep Audio
snd_hda_intel : Intel Corporation IN10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (vendor:8086 device:27d8 subv:17aa aubd:3bf8) (rev: 02)

The same chip as in my other machines, all working with Mageia 1 (as this has been before).

What does dmesg tell you about snd_hda_intel? When i'm back home i'll give you the other sound troubleshooting hints.

There seems to be a problem with the driver.

FWIW:
For one, maybe you need to adjust the hw:0 part, which is the selector which card to play this on,
but if there is no card available, that won't help, and the second error just means that you haven't got
that audiofile ;)

dmesg does not say anything specific - I checked the dmesg output of my other machine with the same chip and the same OS (Mageia 1), the output is the same except:
On the machine with working sound I have
Code: Select all
hda_codec: ALC888: BIOS auto-probing
...... <other messages>
autoconfig: line_outs=3 (0x14/0x15/0x16/0x0/0x0)
   speaker_outs=1 (0x17/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0)
   hp_outs=1 (0x1b/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0)
   mono: mono_out=0x0
   dig-out=0x11/0x1e
The lines 'hda_codec' and 'autoconfig' are missing on the netbook (no sound).

I don't know where to see which card to use - there is only one card(chip). I'll have to check with a livecd and compare the output.

Booted with a Alpha 2 Gnome Live: Sound works!
Checked dmesg -> exactly the same lines as in the installed version.
Checked lspci and lspcidrake -> exactly the same output
Checked MCC/Sound -> exactly same settings (PA activated, snd_hda_intel)
Checked MCC/Hardware -> exactly same output
In alsamixer pressing F6 I get the option "0 HDA Intel" <<<< this is different, this device is not listed in alsamixer on the installed system
In PA volume control the device is listed as "Internal Audio Analog Stereo" <<<<< in the installed system I get "Dummy" as device.

Running 'lsmod|grep snd' it looks as if some modules are missing in the installed system. Have to compare later.

Now, this is amazing!
After I rebooted into the installed system sound is working! I must have done something which made the device come up after the reboot! Now pa volume control shows the device and vlc plays "The Graduate" :)

Now it is next to impossible to find out what wasted so much of our time. :(

Thx anyway for your efforts!

Now, with a fresh installation of Alpha3 on the same machine I have exactly the same problem. I did all updates, checked PA, everything is exactly the same as I described in my previous posts. I rebooted several times but no sound and no sound device (only "Dummy").

As the problem went away without me knowing why, I am in the same situation as described in my initial post. :(

Go to /etc/pam.d and every .rpmnew files to orginal file name example: system-auth.rpmnew to system-auth and overwrite those files and reboot computer. I cant say if that works to your problem but it did the trick to me when i was using cauldron and getting only fake output from sound card.

There is not one .rpmnew file in /etc/pam.d - maybe because Alpha3 is fairly new and there were no updates to files withing pam.de

Add your user to the "audio" group in /etc/group.
This helped me one time with cauldron and the same symptoms.
cheers,
Bernd
