Sound stopped in Mageia 8 and 9

OAbout a week ago, I had sound in Cauldron, but not in Official. Now I have no sound in either -- some of the time. Video seems to be quite O.K.
This seems to have happened after I updated Minitube to the current version. There are videos in YouTube playable in a browser window, but not in apps.
My sound card is an Xonar with "home theatre" capabilities. Looking at pavucontrol, sound seems to be going to "Line Out" which has no sink, or headphones. Alsamixer cannot see a sink for a basic 2 speaker setup.
I have installed 2 x .asoundrc files in the alternative, but neither one made any diffderence. I can shoot more general problems, but ALSA and Pulse seem to be constantly at war with one another.
That is about all that I can tell you. If I need to create a driver for the missing sink in /proc, I will need to know the parameters.

Thanks for the tip. After running the recommended commands, the command "pactl" no longer exists, and from rpmdrake, putting it back means restoring PulsAudio. I will try Pipewire in Cauldron next.

Yes, I now have sound inj Mageia 9. The beta 2 is solid enough for my basic wants. I must have an error somewhere on 8.

For the lurkers, the changeover to Pipewire in Mga 9 is simple as "falling off a log." In the usual sound config section of MCC, there is now a choice of servers, with a radio button. I moved the choice from Pulse to Pipewire. I was prompted to install the necessary packages, then to reboot. That was all!

This is getting to be a vicious circle. I installed pipewire into a separate Cauldron partition, and there were no problems. So I installed Mga 9 Beta 2 as my main distro, and it refuses to install pipewire. The message is:

The following packages can't be installed because they depend on packages
that are older than the installed ones:
pipewire-utils-0.3.66-1.mga9
task-pipewire-9-2.mga9

I have cleaned up my RPM database. There is no indication what the older dependencies are, and for the time being, I have sound anyway.

You did not say *how* you try to install pipewire.

drakrpm have a bad habit of omitting the reason.

try urpmi, what does it say?

or try the script per the wiki
