[SOLVED] Audio does not work randomly

[SOLVED] Audio does not work randomly

Postby pnbalaji » Feb 14th, '16, 19:54

Hi,

I have been using Mageia 5 for the past couple of months and I am very impressed and happy with it so far. I was able to resolve most of my issues myself with the help of google or mageia forums.

However, I am having a weird sound issue. Audio works sometimes fine, but does not work always.

Whenever I have an issue with the sound, I run the command "pulseaudio -D" from the terminal and it works most of the times, but even with this command it does not work some times.

I searched the forums, but could not locate any thread that is specific to my issue.

Is there a howto guide for Audio setup in mageia that I can follow by steps? If not, can some one help me fix this issue?

FYI, XFCE is my DE and I am using a 2.1 Woofer/Speaker system. It is a F&D F-203G 1500W PMPO system. It works fine in Windows and I also tried live cd of Linux Mint 17.3 and it worked fine in that also.

Also, please find the output of specific commands that I saw in couple of threads.

Re: Audio does not work randomly

Postby pnbalaji » Feb 14th, '16, 19:57

As I mentioned earlier, sound works intermittently which means pulseaudio deamon runs at times. At this time, it was not running.

I ran the command "pulseaudio -D" from the terminal and then the output of ps command is below.

Code: Select all
ps aux | grep pulse
bneelka   2847  1.0  0.1 348304  9796 ?        S<l  23:26   0:00 pulseaudio -D
bneelka   2853  0.0  0.0  76792  3248 ?        S    23:26   0:00 /usr/libexec/pulse/gconf-helper
bneelka   2880  0.0  0.0  12240  2184 pts/0    S+   23:26   0:00 grep --color pulse

However, no sound even after running this command this time.

Please help.

Thanks,
Balaji.

It might help if you could at least describe what issues you have in particular, where you think those can be fixed by pulseaudio -D ...
Also for all the outputs you posted, as which user did you run those commands, as root or your regular user? All those that are mean to be run in user context or that connect to the respective user's daemons will not work when run as root.

Please show the output of the following commands run as your regular user:
Code: Select all
id
systemctl --user status pulseaudio.socket pulseaudio.service -a

Below are the outputs of the command.

Code: Select all

Code: Select all

Next steps please.

You didn't respond to my previous question yet

It would also be greatly appreciated if you could also copy the prompt (hostname/username) if you copy the output.
Seems your setup is not really in a good shape, and there's no dbus running for your user or for your session. Was that also with XFCE, and how did you login to that session, and what login manager do you use?

Please also provide the output as root of
Code: Select all
systemctl --failed
journalctl -ab | grep dbus
ps -ef|grep -v grep|grep -iE "pulse|dbus"
alternatives --display soundprofile

and the output as normal user of
Code: Select all
systemctl --user status
systemd-run --user /bin/ls
echo $DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS
journalctl -ab --user

You can also attach the last one as a text file if it's too long.

Apart from that, looking over your enabled repositories from the initial post, you should definitely disable all the backports repositories, not sure why you enabled them in the first place.

Core Backports (distrib7)
Nonfree Backports (distrib17)
Tainted Backports (distrib27)
Core 32bit Backports (distrib34)

Tainted 32bit Backports (distrib44)

You can disable them via http://doc.mageia.org/mcc/5/en/content/ ... media.html

That is been from mandriva years that you can install packages from backports even they are disabled.

If backports repos are disabled, backports only shown in rpmdrake when you set the filter to backports. That is a feature, not a bug. And that's how it's intended to work.

Hi,

Thanks for the response.

I am not sure under which cases "pulseaudio -D" seems to be fixing the issue. Yesterday, I did a different test. Upon booting, my audio did not work in youtube and in locally stored mp4 file. I ran the "pulseaudio -D" command and then the audio worked for the local video. However, it still did not work for the youtube video.

My userid is bneelka and my hostname is localhost. I will copy paste with the userid and hostname going forward.

I am using LXDM for login and did setup autologin via MCC as I and my wife are the only ones using this desktop.

Below are the outputs of the commands you have asked for.

Code: Select all

I am not sure why I enabled the backports repos. I will disable them. Is it okay if I disable them via MCC? or should I do it via command line? How about tainted repos?

Thanks,
Balaji.

Re: Audio does not work randomly

Postby pnbalaji » Feb 16th, '16, 18:59

Hi,

FYI, my audio has been working fine now. All I did is removing the backports repositories and then ran an "urpmi --auto-update" and that seems to have fixed the issue. I will check for the audio for the next two days and see if I encounter any more issues with the audio.

To me, it looks like the backports repos were the culprit. Some component of pulseaudio from backports repo should have caused the issue.

Thanks,
Balaji.

Does not really matter if you do it via commandline or via MCC. I prefer commandline as it's much quicker. E.g. to disable all repositories containing the string "backports" in their name use
Code: Select all
urpmi.update --ignore backports

MCC would involve clicking a lot of repos, and also paying attention in which small checkbox you click in which row :)
tainted is fine, as it provides many of the often required audio and video codecs.
Repos look normal now.

For the command output, seems you posted two times the same set, once run as user and once as root. You forgot the ones that should be run as user.
But as it seems working now, no need to worry until the issue reappears.

One more thing, as you mentioned sharing your desktop with your wife. Do you use separate user accounts, or do you both work under only one account?
As there may be issues when switching to a different user account, e.g. when any process of your user still has access to the sound card,
and then your wife logs in and also tries to use the soundcard.

Thanks for your reply.

I missed to notice that they are two different set Of commands. I will run them and post it in couple of hours.

Both I and my wife are using the same account only.

Thanks,
Balaji.

Outputs of the commands are below.

Code: Select all
[root@localhost bneelka]# systemctl --failed
  UNIT             LOAD   ACTIVE SUB    DESCRIPTION
● cpupower.service loaded failed failed Configure CPU power related settings
● network.service  loaded failed failed LSB: Bring up/down networking

LOAD   = Reflects whether the unit definition was properly loaded.
ACTIVE = The high-level unit activation state, i.e. generalization of SUB.
SUB    = The low-level unit activation state, values depend on unit type.

2 loaded units listed. Pass --all to see loaded but inactive units, too.
To show all installed unit files use 'systemctl list-unit-files'.

soundprofile - status is manual.

/etc/sound/profiles/alsa - priority 10
/etc/sound/profiles/pulse - priority 20
Current `best' version is /etc/sound/profiles/pulse.

This is an issue, the link should point to /etc/sound/profiles/pulse by default. Did you disable pulse sometime ago via MCC? See http://doc.mageia.org/mcc/5/en/content/draksound.html
You can correct the link by running as root
Code: Select all
alternatives --config soundprofile

and selecting pulse, then best reboot.

Will have a look at the remaining logs later today.

Hi,

Yes, I did disable pulse once via MCC and tried to switch over to Alsa, but it did not help.

So, I enabled pulse again.

Thanks,
Balaji.

Well, seems it's not really enabled per your output. So no need to wonder why you often have to start pulseaudio manually ...

I enabled pulseaudio by running the command "alternatives --config soundprofile" now.

After enabling it, I am not seeing the volume control in the system tray now (after booting). Should I manually add something to "Startup Applications"?

Thanks for your help.

Thanks,
Balaji.

After changing the sound profile to pulseaudio, I am new issues.

Now, sound works, but it very low with even max settings in youtube.

When I click "Pulse Audio Volume Control" from "Sound & Video" menu, I get a dialog box saying "Fatal Error: Unable to connect to Pulse Audio".

Thanks,
Balaji.

I'd recommend deleting
Code: Select all
~/.pulse-cookie
~/.config/pulse/

and testing again after a reboot.

Can you please show the output as user again after a fresh boot of
Code: Select all
systemctl --user status pulseaudio.socket pulseaudio.service -a
ps -ef|grep -v grep|grep -iE "pulse|dbus"

I did whatever you have suggested.

Please find the output of the commands you have requested.

Code: Select all

What happens if you create a new user, and login as that user?

When I create a new user and login as that user, sound is working fine. However, I saw new problems with applications. There was no minimize, close, maximize buttons on any applications.

But pulseaudio seems to be working fine.

Thanks,
Balaji.

That's not a problem with applications, but with the window manager. Try
Code: Select all
xfwm4 --replace

to restart the XFCE window manager.

For your old user, you might try deleting the
Code: Select all
~/.dbus
folder and then rebooting
