No Sound using desk managers KDE4, MATE, CINNAMON and XFCE

Postby anubis » Dec 29th, '15, 05:51

I need help with my sound I have installed Mageia 5 using the x86_64 DVD. I installed the following desk managers KDE4, MATE, CINNAMON and XFCE. I have run the setup in KDE setting the Master Channel to Built in Audio Analog Stereo and setup the Audio Hardware as follows: Sound card built in audio, Profile Analog Stereo Output and Device Configuration to Playback (Built in Audio Analog Stereo ), Connector (Line Out). With this configuration there is no sound when I test right and left speaker. When I attempt to play audio cds there is no sound neither is there sound when I attempt to play a video file in Chromium, IceApe or Mozilla Firefox. I tested the speakers using a LIVEKDE4 and when I tested the speakers using the Audio Hardware configuration listed above the speakers worked however I was unable to get sound using the Firefox. I realize I have no idea what I am doing so I am asking for help. Here is some information that maybe of value to you.

Please provide the output as regular user of
Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v
lspci -tvnn
lsusb -tv

Do you want to use the internal soundcard, or an external? And what other devices do you have currently attached to your box?

Can you please unplug your webcam, then please reboot and show the output of the following commands, but run as regular user, NOT as root:

Code: Select all
systemctl --user status pulseaudio.socket pulseaudio.service
getfacl /dev/snd/*
LC_ALL=C PULSE_LOG=99 pulseaudio --check
LC_ALL=C PULSE_LOG=99 pactl stat
LC_ALL=C PULSE_LOG=99 pactl info

Looks good now, only your internal soundchip with analog and HDMI outputs present. What happens if you do a soundtest now, and what desktop do you use currently?
For a simple test you can also try e.g.
Code: Select all
paplay /usr/share/sounds/KDE-Sys-Log-In.ogg

I got no response when I entered that command. The webcam is still disconnected. I was using KDE4 and have switched to MATE.

What do you see in mate mixer / audio setup now? And you didn't really answer the question:

I set MASTER CHANNEL TO built in audioi analog stereo, Audio HW setup Sound built in stereo, profile analog stereo output, Sound device is playback (built in audio analog stereo) and connector is Line out. When I tested the front left and right speakers there was no sound. When I entered the command paplay /usr/share/sounds/KDE-Sys-Log-In.ogg there was no response. The webcam is still disconnected

Please, code-tags are only meant for log excerpts and terminal output and such, not for regular replies.

If you run e.g. alsamixer as normal user, and press F6 to see all mixers, is there any channel that is muted or one that might need to be enabled?

I can not find a way to adjust the LINE OUT, it is not in Kmix or any other place I have searched. I remember there used to be an adjustment to LINE OUT in I think Kmix but I am not sure.

You should be able to adjust line out with alsamixer. Use the arrow keys (left/right) to move to line out then use the arrow keys (up/down) to adjust the volume.

If what Germ/Dok has said don't work try toggling the s/pdif, some chips default to digital out for some reason

Ok I have sound in Icecape but not in Chromium, Youtube works well will check out CDs playing I have enclosed two attachments. I will increase the Line Out to seem if the sound levels increase, Presently, the volume level is at 90%. For Pete910 what is toggling the s/pdif?

Ok this is an update I have sound in Chromium, Icecape and the kscd and parole media works. When I reconnected the webcam my built in audio switched to Built in Audio Digital when I switched it back to analog the sound returned. Using MATE Sound Preferences webcam is disabled off and uses built in audio digital stereo. I think it strange that when setting up the audio using kmix the hardware setup does not retain it settings whereas using MATE the sound preferences once set do not change. Perhaps I am missing something. I won't close this action until I can verify that this problem is actually resolved.

Once you set the configuration in KDE correctly, it will be retained.
In systemsettings => multimedia => audio and video settings => tab device preferences you can configure device preferences. That should be set to prefer your built in audio digital stereo for the internal soudchip.
And on the tab "audio hardware setup" you should also verify if the correct soundcards is selected. If it's not, select it and the correct profile and click Apply.
This is basically the same as when choosing "configure main channel" from the right-click menu from kmix.

What I have noticed is that on a reboot/restart/start, there is a no sound. When I check the CURRENT MIXER it is set to Built in audio digital stereo (HDMI) and HARDWARE is set to HD Webcam with the profile off. Once I reset them to what they should be the audio functions normally. I have noticed that using Chromium the audio does not work and I have not tried it in Firefox. I am using IceApe as my main browser. I am concerned that the built in audio digital stereo is loaded before built in audio analog stereo. Is there anything I can do or should something be changed in the audio loading sequence? Thank you for all your help.

I tried using pavucontrol made the selection and upon reboot there was no sound. i went to kmix and reset everything and now it works. I decided to try the second suggestion and when I entered "pacmd list-sources | grep -e device.string -e 'name' the response was pulse dameon not running. So I went to kmix and this is the displays that were presented to me. I made these settings and sound returned at a much higher volume. I do not know what is going on. Any ideas???? For some strange reason sound does not work using Chromium and Google Chrome but works fine in IceApe.
