Issues with playback on all videos Flash and HTML 5

Issues with playback on all videos Flash and HTML 5

Postby jdkl81 » Nov 9th, '15, 08:57

Hey,
I have an older Mageia 4 distro in a Toshiba laptop. The sound has never been quite right on this system, but it has been satisfactory and until the last couple of days, excellent through the headphones. Late last week, I started to notice that voice outputs in music videos on YouTube were distorted. It occurs on both Firefox and Opera. I have Flash for Opera and no flash for Firefox. Having read a few of the responses to similar issues here, it sounds like there was a related bug with the H264 plugin on Firefox, and maybe some issues with not all dependencies enabled in the software repositories. On the other hand I could be missing something simple in the Mageia Control Center with regard to how the audio devices are setup as I am still learning that. Does this sound like a software issue, a sound card issue or something where I need to adjust the settings of my built in analog stereo? As far as I know, I made no changes to the settings that previously worked. I do not know if I gave you enough information to be helpful. A potentially critical footnote to all this is that for months now, I have not been able to get any audio playback through the laptops speakers, but only through my headphones. Any advice would be appreciated...even if all you can tell me is what other information I need to give so you can help. Thanks in advance.

What help do you expect in particular? You mention flash, html5 and h264, and that you only have flash in opera and not in firefox.
flash doesn't have anything to do with h264, and both are completely separate from each other.

As you don't provide any example link to a video, and as you don't mention if only voices are distorted it's difficult to understand the overall issue.
You also mention that until the last couple of days sound was excellent through the headphones. As far as I'm aware there were no further updates for Mageia 4 since september this year.
Sounds more like you have a general sound issue on your box. Is there anything that plays and sounds normally that you can test locally?

Also the "bug" about h264 and firefox was only about that the necessary codecs are not installed by default, which has always been the case, as they are only in the tainted repositories.
See https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15043 and especially the latest two comments there for workarounds/solutions.

Doktor,
I'm not really sure what kind of help I need. I tend to agree with you that it might be an issue with my hardware rather than a Mageia issue exactly. I didn't know if there was a fix or a bug I had missed. I'm not sure how I could send you a video clip that you would hear like I do. You'd hear it through your presumably well running system no? But I do understand that all of those platforms are very different, and yes the issue shows up on html 5 as well as flash. My point was that it doesn't seem to matter which platform it is I seem to have issues. Many times I see diagnostic terminal commands here; I thought perhaps someone would suggest one that might give me an idea if the system was in order or not. Things have not been right for awhile, but sound was good through the headphones. I should probably check them on a known well-running system just to be sure. You are indeed correct that the distortion is most evident with the human voice, and at that mostly in music, where the music plays normally but the voices are unrecognizable and difficult to hear. Thanks for being patient with my questions. If I wanted to make sure the tainted and non gui audio repositories were working as in the bug you cited, what would I search for in the conrol center? Codec specifically or multimedia in general? Thanks.

Please show the output of
Code: Select all
urpmq --list-media active --list-url

And for sound, please show the outputs as normal user of
Code: Select all
systemctl --user status pulseaudio.socket pulseaudio.service
grep -i codec /proc/asound/card*/codec*
lspcidrake -v | grep -i audio
pacmd ls
pactl list cards
pacmd list-sinks
amixer controls

If you read all that.... I don't know what to say...but thanks so much for any help you can give. I wonder if it has something to do with that Codec command showing DEAD. I really don't know as much as I should about this system, but I got the idea that that was a very crucial piece of the Mageia multimedia package. Thanks again.

Re: Issues with playback on all videos Flash and HTML 5

For one, you're missing the tainted repos, where all the interesting audio and video codecs are located. Please run http://doc.mageia.org/mcc/5/en/content/ ... media.html and enable "tainted release" and "tainted updates" and then please run as root
Code: Select all
urpmi --auto-update
and you should get a big load of tainted packages. I'll need to check the other stuff tomorrow, but the issue about pulseaudio.socket pulseaudio.service being "inactive (dead)" seems to be a problem, pulseaudio doesn't seem to run for your user session.
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!

Thanks for your help. I will enable the tainted repos and run the suggested command and let you know what happens.
