No sound with Mageia 5 (upgrade and instal) SB4x0

Postby soundmanbe » Sep 5th, '15, 21:40

Hi,

With the upgrade on mageia 5, I lost the sound on my laptop.
After new full installation of mageia 5, it's the same.

Pulseaudio is running and pavucontrol shows modulation.... but no output sound.
(All output levels are at 100%)
Audio card SB4x0 on aspire 5040 laptop
Any suggestion?

What desktop environment do you use? What is selected as primary output?

Please show the output as normal user of
Code: Select all
systemctl --user status pulseaudio.socket pulseaudio.service
pulseaudio --check
pactl stat
getfacl /dev/snd/*
pactl list cards
pacmd list-sinks

You're missing what desktop you're using, you only showed the Mageia release. Do you use KDE, GNOME, MATE, ... ?
Apart from that, looks all good. You only seem to be having one soundcard.

Can you please run pavucontrol and post a screenshot of the "output devices" tab and the "configuration" tab when sound is currently playing?

Sorry, I erased the desktop information by mistake, it's KDE
It's because everything looks normal .... without sound ...(in the speakers, line output jack and phone jack) that I post this problem ... ;)

Is it normal that the sound configuration in CCM doesn't propose any pilote's choice ? The pilote line doesn't appear.
Sound card SB4x0 = alc883 . (same without pulseaudio selected)

Pilote means driver, right? Yes that is normal, as there's only snd_hda_intel driver for all newer HDA sound chips, there's no alternative driver you could select.

And for the screenshots, this one
Image
suggests that nothing is plugged in to your line-out jack ... maybe you used the wrong jack?
Or jack detection doesn't work ...

And FWIW, when posting output or screenshots, it's helpful if you prefix the commands by LC_ALL=C so they show in english ;)
E.g. for pavucontrol would be
Code: Select all
LC_ALL=C pavucontrol
- but doesn't matter that much now, I understood the important stuff.

Thank's for the LC_ALL=C command, I didn't know it.

That's your problem. It's the pulse module that interfaces with the KDE (and GNOME) device manager and mixer.
You can load it via
Code: Select all
/usr/bin/pactl load-module module-device-manager "do_routing=1"
which is usually done by /usr/bin/start-pulseaudio-x11
which is run on every X start via either /etc/xdg/autostart/pulseaudio.desktop or /etc/X11/xinit.d/50pulseaudio for more exotic desktops that don't know XDG autostart.

Please show the output as normal user of
Code: Select all
echo $KDE_FULL_SESSION

I did :

Code: Select all
$ /usr/bin/pactl load-module module-device-manager "do_routing=1"
19

Try again
Code: Select all
$ LC_ALL=C pactl list modules | grep device-manager
        Name: module-device-manager

Still no sound. :?

urpme pulseaudio-module-x11;
urpmi pulseaudio-module-x11;
restart the laptop.
Now the command allways shows :
Code: Select all
$ LC_ALL=C pactl list modules | grep device-manager
        Name: module-device-manager

Module is loaded.
But still no sound. :?

Your asked code :
Code: Select all
$ echo $KDE_FULL_SESSION
true

Thank's for your time.

Hmm, could you try right-clicking on kmix in the system tray and select "select master channel". What's selectable there and what is selected for "playback devices"?

Also the same if you right-click on kmix and choose audio setup. Is the playback stuff all set to your current soundcard?
And if you change to the "audio hardware setup" tab, can you attach screenshot here please? Do you hear any sound if you click the
buttons in the "speaker placement and testing" section?

Alternatively, please create a new user and try with that one. Still no sound?

There is no sound at all (same when I try the test sound and L/R speakers etc ...)
I allready had test all the possibilities before the post.

Here are the results for Kmix : ( ;) if you need some translation, just ask)

There is something strange with the Audio pref (first tab). If I select the sound card (internal Analogic audio) and push on test ... nothing, if I select a second time the same sound card and run test again, an error appear : "Impossible to select the Audio card".

All the problems still the same with a new user. :(

You could try a LiveDVD to check out if you get sound there. Otherwise it might be an issue of the kernel module and you may need to add some option for a proper codec detection

Or check the mixer channels. Run alsamixer as normal user, press F6 to see all mixer channels and check if there are some that are muted (showing as [MM] below the scale)
or maybe attach a screenshot of that here. You could also use
Code: Select all
amixer -c 0
to get the text form of that.

Please also show the output as root of
Code: Select all
journalctl -ab | grep -i hda
