Code: Select all
Jan 28 09:29:45 localhost nmbd[3510]:   *****
Jan 28 09:29:55 localhost pulseaudio[1763]: alsa-sink.c: ALSA woke us up to write new data to the device, but there was actually nothing to write!
Jan 28 09:29:55 localhost pulseaudio[1763]: alsa-sink.c: Most likely this is a bug in the ALSA driver 'snd_hda_intel'. Please report this issue to the ALSA developers.
Jan 28 09:29:55 localhost pulseaudio[1763]: alsa-sink.c: We were woken up with POLLOUT set -- however a subsequent snd_pcm_avail() returned 0 or another value < min_avail.

What might these messages mean?
When the sound crashes how can I restart it with-out rebooting?
What might be the cause?

1. there's probably a bug in the snd_hda_intel driver as the message says
2. the sound did not crash, and normally there's no need to restart it because pulseaudio auto-spawns
3. see 1.

Is there a real error, besides reading those messages?

yes the sound stops working. PluseAudio shows there is sound but no sound is getting to the amp.
Phonon wont keep any settings I put in it eirther.
it constantly changes back to Audio device 0 (not the 1 I want to use) or losses all sound devices.

As a temporary workaround, you can start programs by prefixing them with pasuspender. F.ex. pasuspender bash
in a terminal would give you a shell where pulseaudio doesn't touch the hardware, it directly goes to ALSA.
I'll try to have our sound guru take a look at this.

Ive also noticed with vlc media player now I've mapped it straight to alsa (from with in vlc Audio preferences) when the sound dissapears (quiet often) that If click the front left speaker test in phonon the sound returns. I think the problem is in phonon.

What phonon backend do you use? In systemsettings -> multimedia -> phonon -> backend.
Normally you get the best results with the VLC backend.

Thats for your reply, After creating another user and logging as that user sound worked and seams to be working again as me .
The problem seams to have gone away at the minute I did notice when I went into phonon to have a look if the settings where still the same , kde does want to forget about the device I'm using but I have sound so Ill settle for that for now.
edit spoke too soon sound lasted about 5 minutes then dissapaered again and wont restart . I cant see where its muted.

Is there a config file some where that Im not configuring Im having heaps of sound problems that I have no idea what Im doing.
Can some1 point me in the dircetion of how i configure sound in kde on Magiea 64 bit version.

Just a shot in the dark:

i would try deleting the files in ~/.pulse,
and log out and back in again.

I've tried all of the things mentioned and still cant get hda 1 and internal sound to stay as my default sound , I'm still at a complete loss was to what the issue is.
If I pull the capture card out and reinstall, then put the tv/card back in will internal audio come up default ?
or will the problem return as soon as I put the tv/capture card back in?
