wifi no longer working in Mageia 5

wifi no longer working in Mageia 5

Postby Gelsenbury » Jul 6th, '15, 17:45

I have just installed Mageia 5 a week ago or so. (I did a format and fresh install from the DVD.) My main PC has to connect to my wifi router via a Texet USB adapter, which Mageia recognises as a Realtek 802.11n WLAN adapter. This worked OK in Mageia 4. In Mageia 5, I got connected once when setting up the connection. Since then, it has not worked. I can see my router, but whether I try to set up and connect via the net applet in the system tray or via the Control Centre, the connection fails.

Having checked similar threads, I hope the following information is useful:

I use the KDE desktop and the standard Mageia net applet. The networkmanager package is not installed.

Seems you do not receive an answer from your DHCP server for the wireless interface. Please show the output as root of

Code: Select all
sudo systemctl status systemd-networkd.service
rfkill list all
iwconfig
sudo iwlist wlp0s29f7u6 scan

Thank you for the reply, and sorry about the delay to mine. I haven't been working on this machine recently.

Re: wifi no longer working in Mageia 5

Postby wintpe » Aug 3rd, '15, 17:26

I cant see whats wrong from the logs you have displayed

but , i find that once the password is stored wrong in the config files, that it keeps reverting back to openwep
and its quite frustrating to get right.

when this happens, i usually delete the offending wireless config file that lives in

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/wireless.d.

just clear this directory of files, or move them somewhere else if you have any stored configs for hotspots etc, and then
start the authentication process again from scratch.

However once thing I can say, I had a prism card recently that would connect OK in non encrypted mode, but would not connect at all in encrypted, even wep.

sometimes its just the wireless card/usb stick and trying another usually solves it, as it did for me.

Seems you're currently connected to the AP "PlusnetWireless" but no IP adress was obtained - is that the expected AP?
You should probably have a look in the config of your AP/router and check the DHCP configuration there, and what devices you can see.
Also check the logs for DHCP leases.

To follow up on Peter's suggestion, if you want to cleanup the wireless configs and start from scratch I'd suggest this:

Code: Select all
drakconnect --del    => select all your wireless connections to remove them
rm -f /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/wireless.d/*
systemctl stop wpa_supplicant.service
mv /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf /etc/wpa_supplicant.backup
rpm -e --nodeps wpa_supplicant
urpmi wpa_supplicant

Re: wifi no longer working in Mageia 5

I have done this, without success. What is interesting is that the network manager in the Mageia Control Centre still remembers my (correct) wifi password for the (correct) Plusnet Wireless connection. As far as I understand, the commands that you have both sent me are meant to delete all relevant configuration files. So there may still be something interfering somewhere.

It is possible that my wifi dongle is broken, but it seems like a big coincidence that this should happen just as I've upgraded Mageia. It worked fine while I was using Mageia 4, and during the first session after the upgrade.

I wouldn't know how to check my router's configuration, but I'll try to find out. That, or a new wireless dongle, seem to be the best options now. In the meantime, I have the workaround of connecting my mobile phone via USB, which in turn is connected to the wifi.

Thank you for your help.

Re: [SOLVED] wifi no longer working in Mageia 5

Postby Gelsenbury » Aug 27th, '15, 11:24

I bought a new USB wifi adapter to try it out. It took several attempts to get the network going, but it is now working for the fourth day in a row. It seems as if the old dongle really had chosen the time of the system upgrade to break. I'm surprised by this, and even by the idea that a USB device without any mechanical parts can "break"! But wifi is working now, so I've labelled the issue solved.

Thank you for eliminating most other causes for me. I would never have had the idea without your help.

This is an interesting and frustrating problem. I should have known that something would go wrong again the moment I mark it as solved.

The new network adapter worked for a few days and then developed the same problem. I managed to fix it again more quickly this time by following the steps you suggested for "starting from scratch". It's working again for the moment. But there may be some more investigation required to find out why the setup fails - if it does fail again.
