Cannot connect to Huawei B593S wifi

I have a brand new Huawei B593S 4G router with WIFI & LAN. When I connected the wifi at first, it worked fine with my linux machines (Mageia 4 on laptop and Mageia 4 (64bit) on tabletop WS), but out of the blue it just stopped working. I use Zyxel NWD2205 wireless USB adapter and as said, it worked fine in the beginning (two days ago). And it also keeps working fine on my windows 8.1 (dual boot on the tabletop PC). I did not do anything (not even any updates - IIRC) and it just stopped working.

My Mageia WSs cannot connect to my network - unless I take all protection down. With open connetion I can connect through wifi to the B593S router. But even with WEP protection - nothing. And I always use WPA2 protection.

No difference if I broadcast SSID or not.

I also tried with my Buffalo USB (tiny) wifi adapter, but the same issue: cannot connect to my network router.

The network is working and I have internet access if I connect with my LAN cable & powerline adapter (ethernet over powerline). But for some reason that line is less what I get over wifi (now only in Windows 8.1)...

To me this seems to be a problem with Mageia. I don't have any other distro at home, so cannot test any other distros.

I tried searching the forum and in general over the internet for a solution, but could not find any. I would appreciate if someone could give me a hand! Thanks!

Your best bet: remove the wireless connections completely, and switch to networkmanager.

To remove the old wireless connection, do the following as root

drakconnect --del    => select all your wireless connections to remove them
rm -f /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/wireless.d/*
systemctl stop wpa_supplicant.service
mv /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf /etc/wpa_supplicant.backup
rpm -e --nodeps wpa_supplicant
urpmi wpa_supplicant

OK, sorry, but I must ask... It wasn't as easy as I thought it might be (for me).
In your command list above a few questions:
1) I removed all wireless connections - not the wired one (eth). Was this correct?
2) The line second to last I uninstall the wpa_supplicant, but on the last line I install it again. Why do that?

And then I installed networkmanager and networkmanager-applet. OK. but then you state that the service should be first started and then stopped. And I have also net_applet is set NOT to autostart

As the /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf is marked as a configuration file in the rpm, a simple reinstallation via urpmi --replacefiles --replacepkgs wpa_supplicant would not generate a clean config file, it would stay like it is.
This file contained the wireless keys and SSID of the networks that you have connected to, and this way is the easiest to start fresh there.
Your old credentials have been backed up to /etc/wpa_supplicant.backup

Yeah right that part is a bit confusingly written, sorry. Basically when net_applet would be still running and you start networkmanager,
you can manage the connection for a few minutes with networkmanager, then it will stop to work as net_applet and networkmanager will be in conflict.

For the wireless connection, you need to create that via the network manager applet. You may need to start the applet, it is called nm-applet and looks like this
on left-click (leftmost icon in systray)

Either select your network where the available ones are listed (all available ones should be listed) or at the bottom there's '"Create New Wifi Network".

As I'm using KDE, the KDE plasmoid (plasma-applet-nm) for this looks a bit differently:

Oh, thanks! That applet looks nice. I must try this soon, but first I have to clean my system as the /var has become full and it's not stable anymore.

I'll let you know how it goes with NM.

Yes, I think I got it now! One thing though, how do I start the plasma-applet-nm? I seem to be unable to do it automatically. I can open it though console by

You mixed them up :) plasma-applet-nm is the second screenshot in my post and meant for KDE.
To enable it, right-click on the systray => system tray settings => and at the bottom in the section "additional elements" tick the box for "networkmanagement", and it will appear in the systray.
You can also have it as standalone applet anywhere in the control panel or on the desktop via the usual "add plasmoid" dialog.

For nm-applet, if you want to let it autostart in KDE, you need to change something in the autostart file, as it will not be loaded by default in KDE. As root run

But under KDE that looks pretty ugly, the other one integrates much nicer and looks better.

Thanks Doc, I got that applet issue now settled... :-)

But I still have a problem with that connection! It will not give me enough speed - and sometimes it seems to refuse connection entirely (not connected). Currently I get around 0.5 Mbps wirelessly while with the same hw in Windows 8.1 I get 40 to 50 Mbps... So there is still something wrong.

Any idea where to look?

Currently it's attached with a short stiff usb ext cable it came with. I can try without, but now I get over 50 Mbps with this! I don't understand. But even now, if started to cut the traffic, but then I got the over 50 Mbps back.

Now it just stopped working and I had to switch back to eth connection.

Actually looks pretty normal. The above option is what I was looking for. Can you try to unload the module and reload it, and enable software crypto

OK, I did these two. It didn't work for the current session. I rebooted the whole thing and it started to work. But as always, the connection seems to be fading all the time... Currently my laptop (running Mageia 4 32bit) is getting 45 Mbps sitting right next to the PC, that is getting now 28 Mbps. And getting worse all the time.

And now that connection died totally givin no connection at all. I tried changing to another wireless network that this Huawei can give, and that worked. But again, for how long.

Now this is weird... I connect one of the two wifi networks created by this Huawei and it works for awhile. Then the connection is cut. I change to the other SSID and that works fine. Until it stops again soon and I swap that connection back to the first one. And like magic (yes, it's Mageia) it works now. For a short while. But then it stops working.

So that got me thinking: what if the problem is with the two separate wifi networks this Huawei is creating. So I booted to Windows (the huawei web maintenance page does not work from Linux...) and turned one of the two networks off - just to test the theory. But I guess it's not that as the first thing I tested when I got back to Mageia was the speed. Depressing 7 Mbps... Still the ping is good (16ms) and the upload is good at 24 Mbps, but the download is something like 7Mbps (or worse)! And then that died and I had to move back to eth to be able to post this.

I don't get it... :o

You often mention the bitrate, that is not really relevant as your actual transfer speeds will be magnitudes slower then the nominal connection bitrate.
Do you only use the connection bitrate to determine link quality? And for the ping you mentioned, what do you ping?
To watch the signal level, you can run as root

and keep it open, it will refresh every second.
Although those statistics are often unreliable, depending on driver and chipset.

For the lost connection, can you show the output as root of

I measure the connection to internet by speedtest.net. That is a very good indicator to whether I have a working network or not. Since that is operational all the time and gets that 50 Mbps connection out (I'm watching IPTV through that connection). When the speed is decreasing it is not working properly and soon will reach nil. And the connection to my router is lost.

I put the wireless watch on as you suggested, but it's not giving me any numbers at all - I cannot get wireless connection to my router.

Well, there's nothing out of the ordinary in the networkmanager logs. Can't help much further than that, this seems to be a driver/chipset problem.
The only other thing that comes to mind would be to use the proprietary driver from Realtek. Should be this one: http://www.realtek.com/downloads/downlo ... =true#2772
