roll back sane-backends

roll back sane-backends

Postby Trio3b » Sep 6th, '14, 07:55

MGA 3 + Brother DCP7020 printer drivers installed OK and printer is accessible via static IP. Scanner drivers installed OK and scanner working if using USB but I am trying scanner networked also at same static IP . Followed Brother instructions to configure network scanning using brsaneconfig2. Scanner is recognized by xsane and acquireimage but both return error " failed to open device"

Apparently there are issues with xsane and newer backends. Current sane backend installed is 1.0.23. Xsane recommends rolling back to 1.0.19.
Have enabled core backports in drakrpm but can't find older versions. Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Where does xsane recommend downgrading backends? Please provide a link for that...

Your problem is probably a permission problem, as for most brother scanners you need to take special steps to be able to scan as normal user.
For the instructions see http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux ... edirect=on

If you run xsane as root, are you able to scan?

http://www.xsane.org/ recommends trying version 1.0.19 or earlier if problems.

Cannot run as root. Device is recognized but same error "invalid argument". I have installed this multipurpose printer many times over the years on different distros but never tried networking. The Brother udev rule is already included in 60-libsane.rules but I added the newer Brother recommendation for MDV/ MGA anyway. Root or user gets the same error.

The printer is not factory networked. Am using a lynksys print server ethernet wired through lynksys router ( not wireless) and from PS via USB to printer. Again, I can print fine through the print server so I know the laptop sees the printer. I can also ping the print server fine. I also followed Brother instructions to run brscanconf2 to install as networked printer.

1.Is it possible that I am trying to use the same static IP (192.168.1.119) for both the printer and scanner and that is the issue? I can try temporarily deleting the printer and see if that frees up the IP address for the scanner.
2. Just read that lynksys print server may not allow networked scanning
3. "invalid argument" indicates some bad description someplace
4. udev rules lists Brother as part of "USB group" Maybe needs to be also listed in other /etc/group?

However would still like to try to roll back sane-backends. I would like to learn to do this anyway for future knowledge. How do I access older packages? Is this not through backports?

Maybe this belongs in printers or networking forum.

Thanks

You do realize that this is news tip from 5 years ago?

In general that is possible, but only if there are older versions of the package available (which is not the case for sane-backends).
urpmi --downgrade packagename will install the most recent version available via the currently configured repositories, that is older then the currently installed package. You can also downgrade to a specific package version, then you need to specific full name+version.
Also backports is something completely from the opposite direction - backports are newer versions of packages backported usually from cauldron to older Mageia releases.

For your problem in general, scanning may not be supported through a printserver, as it uses different protocols:

Better get an MFC that can be directly attached via network.

Yes, tip is old. Will do more research on this print server.

Thanks for the help
