Considering that Windows Wrapper doesn't work any more. Microsoft 'encouraged' wireless Network adapter makers to make an install program that ran under windows. And then got them to copyright the driver which makes no sense, perhaps Linux flavours should have their own drivers. I know Mageia supports the WiFi adapter in the kit I've used for years and seeing "Use Windows driver" spoils my whole day. Bill would have cut his own tongue out rather than than than admit there is any other operating system than Windows.

Now I get to hospital and you can use mobile phones and there is even open WiFi on the ward. I need to get the WiFi adapter working now.

Can you at least mention what the problem is, and what wireless chip you're using?
Can't you find the proper windows driver, are there issues with installing the windows driver, or with loading the windows driver?

Please show the output of
Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v

Mageia 2 does contain the drver for the Wifi card so I'd much prefer to use that. Reading the ERRATTA page theire seems to be a alternate kernal I installed the one in the extra software[/code]

Please be so kind to put command-output in between CODE-tags, this keeps the forum better readable, thank you!!!

lspcidrake doesn't show any wireless device. Please run
Code: Select all
lsusb
as root and post the output here - you may need to install usbutils package for that.

Then why don't you use Mageia 2?

What alternate kernel? What extra software? Do you have a link to that particular section of the Errata page you're referring to?

I read it in the install errata, This could be a hardware issue y'know thinking back it was dropping the connection in M1 , may be it's just failed. I got another identical Acer Aspire one the case is a bit cracked and the keyboard keeps popping out, but I've just booted it, installed Mageia 2 Live and it seems OK, it connects to my wireless network fine though. I've got two because that's how it arrived the said they would send a label, a van to pick it up, but the new one arrived and the damaged one came back to my return address a couple of weeks later I think return carriage was like £3, I suppose it could be damaged inside. The cat 5 RJ45 wired adapter is still OK so I can still do my Home network

What did you read in the install errata, could you please quote that here?

Sorry, but if you don't provide specific information and reply to questions asked, but instead your thoughts, jumping from one to something completely unrelated and back, can't help you further. Already mentioned that in viewtopic.php?f=25&t=4788

ath5k wireless problems on a HP Compaq Presario CQ60-415so not my exact kit but a analogous problem
Something blocks wlan0-interface from starting up and there's a possible workaround to that:

Install rfkill
Disable the eth0-interface
Now enable wlan0-interface

Then type:

rmmod -f ath5k
rfkill unblock all
modprobe ath5k

Realtek USB wireless adapter does not work after live install

The firmware for the Realtek USB wireless adapter is incorrectly removed during live install, and the Mageia network configuration tools freeze when trying to configure it. You can install the rtlwifi-firmware package to fix the issue.

This is reported as https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6064
some hardware doesn't work because it needs firmware

If your hardware doesn't work, you can try to install the kernel-firmware-nonfree package that is in the nonfree repositories and then reboot your computer. After rebooting, check if your hardware is now working. Note : you need this package for the firmware needed by some wifi network card, etc...
some HP devices require a plugin which can't be installed automatically

Which part of that exactly? The ath5k part is about Atheros devices, and only required for a few laptops, not in general. The Realtek part is something totally different and unrelated. But anyways, as you mentioned those, did you check if your adapter is blocked via rfkill list all? Did you check which firmware packages you have installed via rpm -qa | grep firmware

Also you still didn't answer the question for the wireless chipset you're using, or the specific problems you seem to have with ndiswrapper, if you want to use that.
So please provide the following information:
- make and model of you Acer Aspire laptop/netbook
- version of Mageia you're currently using
