Router dropping internet

Router dropping internet

Postby dwhite » Nov 3rd, '13, 16:26

On this occasion my use of Mageia is immaterial. Rather than swapping out the Netgear 1000 SP that Virgin media supplied I just put my new settings in to it, for Bt on this occasion when I changed Providers. I rarely if ever use the router Pre-configured and supplied by whatever ISP I'm currently with. Am I wrong? Can an 'old ' router be resurrected? I have a box full of old routers, are they just like a PC has the main board a battery to keep the settings ROM powered there must be a factory ROM too, has that a battery? The Bt support advice centre can only send me a Bt hub to cure my problem is there an alternative?

excluding the obvious, ie cable for cable and copper for copper any adsl router will work with any
supplier as long as all the correct settings are applied.

i have always bought my adsl router based on the features of that specific router and not on the ISP's recommendations.

if its dropping the internet check all the settings, for example the VPI/VCI setting which from memory i usually set to 0 and 38.

the right encapsulation type for your provider ie PPOa or PPOe ie use PPPoA, with eclipse, who run over BT lines.

Mux = VC Mux

MTU = 1500

DNS and Wan ip should be left to assigned by supplier, and there are set automaticly as the connection comes up.

ive had occasion to override these when setting up friends who have tiscali

BT should advertise their router settings somewhere.

Hi Peter, I was always of that opinion, and shied away from Bt 'giving' me a home hub. The Netgear/Virgin router seemed like much better kit. I'm only with bt 'coz I I want fibre optic and I figure I might get it first with them. ;) But at the risk of sounding paranoid. Unless bt support was lying whether the adsl feed was in reality going to my flat, or was it a faulty test result why would the Netgear router just stop working? As time goes by does a Router's PCB just stop working?

well BT's fibre broadband needs a newer type of router to a adsl2 router, so if your netgear is an ADSL2 router thats your problem.

but there are alternatives to BT's

I use Zytel routers , currently the P660H, for adsl2

BT broadband is i believe VDSL2, so if your netgear is not VDSL2 then thats the problem.

Any electronics can fail, is the netgear also known as DGN1000 if so thats just adsl2

alternative to the BT hub

http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/Sp ... ctID=15196, would be the one i would buy.

but i have not tried it so you have to take that recommendation with a pinch of salt...

ps you sig has an error, linux miy be efficient but wont run in 16 mb of mermory

Infinity isn't available in my post code yet but it is on the list. Exchanges are done but my street box isn't. A friend of mine has it, a few streets away, but I'm still waiting.

Bt are currently upgrading. The Home hub they send out now has an extra RJ45 socket labelled Infinity, and a USB. So my box of routers will be adsl1, maybe I can donate them to the third world.
The router on the link looks good, but I haven't looked at the Bt router's admin page, but that won't say anything for its quality just whether its easy to administer! I didn't hear ANYTHING good about BT's adsl1 router, but that might have change on this one
