WiFi will not work in Mageia 3

Hi,
I have been reading glowing reviews of Mageia 3 and decided to try it. I downloaded the DVD ISO today and have been trying it as a live DVD before (possibly) installing it.

I have an EDIMAX 802.11g PCI WiFi card which has a RALINK chipset and although Mageia can "see" both the card and my network, I cannot connect to it, I have entered the WEP password in upper case and also in lower case but cannot connect, The error message suggests that there is a problem with the WiFi settings or the modem, but the modem is working fine with Windows7 and a friend's laptop which is eunning Ubunti 13.04. To begin with I let Mageia set up the card and then I tried doing it manually but in neither case will it work with Mageia

Mageia did not suggest using NDISWRAPPER so I am assuming that it is not required

Mageia seems pretty good and I would like to install it but only if I can get the WiFi to work. Can anyone suggest what I need to do to get my WiFi card to connect, please?

Unfortunately you can't change settings and reboot... they'd disappear with the live system. I have encountered only 1 or 2 wireless systems I couldn't get running with Mageia. I'd assume if you installed you'd be able to get it going. It might be as simple as setting it up, rebooting and running the setup again. (I've seen that happen)

Of course there's no guarantee it will work, there are a few chip sets totally incompatible with Linux, though I've never seen an utterly incompatible ralink before. Worst case is get a usb wifi and use that. I've had to do that in days past, on a few laptops with cheap 'winmodem-like' broadcom wifi chips sets.

Hello,

I have a chipset Ralink RT2500 and it works fine with Mageia 2 and 3.
What is the output of
Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v |grep -i net

Thanks for your replies. I took note of what you said, oj, and installed Mageia. As I do not own the desktop machine here but share it with someone else, I installed it on a portable hard drive so as not to interfere with the other user's stuff. The WiFi now works properly but Mageia looks to have a rather steep learning curve

I'd say actually Mageia's learning curve, compared to many linux distro's, is actually quite short. They do everything they can to make it possible to manage your system without going to a terminal.
