Wi-Fi cannot connect to unencrypted access point

A very unexpected problem with Mageia

When I need to connect in a business to unencrypted networks the computer then requires rebooting.
As there are many access points in that building it now needs setting all over again. And,of course re-booting.

The net result is that it is impossible to actually connect.

And yet computers using Mandriva or other distros all are able to connect.

Are you using the tools in mcc? If so, see if it's set to allow the interface to be managed by networkmanager. You may have some conflict due to having the two tools trying to manage the connection. Networkmanager is the tool in the notification panel (bottom right) which, unfortunately, doesn't provide as much information as the mcc tool does. Nevertheless, you're probab ly better off using it, rather than the tools in mcc.

Aside from that, I find this situation is often fixed by restarting the wireless router. If that's an option I usually start with that to try to fix it.

Where I have not had access to the router (to restart it) I've had to reboot upwards of 3 times before the dang thing would get an IP. I've never figured out what the actual problem is.

Yes, I just use the Mageia C C.
This problem seems to be because there are so many access points, variously called 'Guest' or 'Clear Guest'.

Logically we should be able when we wish to connect to the unencrypted naccess point, we should simply be ably to select it and connect WITHOUT rebooting.

Why is this not the case with Mageia? what has changed relative to Mandriva?

This is serious problem and I have raised it as a critical bug - 10727

I do hope that somebody will come back and resolve the problem. I have not, so far, found another distro which behaves in this insane manner.

We should NEVER have to re-boot except when we install something which has influence on the kernel, certainly putting in an encryption key is not one of those occasions and as for refusal to connect to unencrypted access points, very odd.

In a normal home situation there will not be a problem as one does has a single dominant access point.
