[SOLVED] Connecting through Belkin 150N Wifi Adapter

Hi Everyone,

I am new to Mageia - I just moved to Mageia 3 from Ubuntu 13.04 after it crashed again for the 57th time.

I am currently running Mageia 3 on my desktop with an Intel Core2Duo processor. The installation was very smooth but I'm having difficulty with connecting to any Wi-Fi network. Owing to the position of my heavy desktop, I cannot connect it to any wired internet. Mageia 3 is able to give me the list of the wireless networks but I am unable to connect to any. When I click to connect, it first asks me to install the wpa_supplicant. When I say ok, it asks me to insert the medium named core release. Inserting the usb drive from which I installed doesn't seem to help.

Does anyone know how I can get around this? I'd really like to get the internet running!

Thanks!

Insert the USB drive and then browse it using a file manager. You should be able to find the wpa_supplicant package. Clicking on it should open a dialogue to install it. Then run through the network setup wizard again.

Once you have WiFi working go to MageiaControlCentre>software>media and remove the definition for the current USB source and click the button to add a full set of online sources. By default the sources for non free packages and tainted packages will be disabled. enable them if you need any non free drivers or packages covered by patents.

Starting with Mageia 3, the installation media, after being written to a flash drive will not get shown as removable media, at least not in KDE. Hence it may not be accessible.

Hi djennings and doktor5000, thank you both for responding.

djennings, that was my initial idea, to perhaps use the USB drive to locate the package and install. You're right, doktor5000, Mageia 3 doesn't recognize the USB drive after install. Using the help of one MrsB one the #mageia channel on freenode, I was able to locate and install the wpa_supplicant package from a mirror using a Win7 device - sadly this didn't work.

Thankfully, my disk was empty and a complete reinstall ensured that the wpa_supplicant was automatically installed. This time I wrote Mageia 3 onto a DVD and installed from there on, and to my surprise, the internet started working post-reinstall, no problems with wpa_supplicant or inserting the medium called core release (I still couldn't access the usb drive that I had inserted with winXP drivers for the Wifi adapter during post installation setup stage). More extensive online searches revealed that there is a bug around using realtek wifi adapters - the wpa_supplicant is also another error that people have complained about.

Thank you both, I hope to have a good time with Mageia.
