hi

i am noob to linux and dual booted the mageia 3 beta 4 gnome in my asus n56vm-ab71 machine everything in installation went fine, but after reboot and grub selection to boot mageia, the os is not booting and it struck with "boot: starting network manager wait online..." it is in the same place for almost half an hour. Even i did forced restart but struck at the same location. Any suggestion to fix this problem....Other than this i am really comfortable with dual booting my win7 operation( i mean the dual boot is fine) in dual boot.

thanks and regards
karthik

If you are a beginner with Linux you should not really use beta versions but the latest stable Mageia 2 release... (you can download it here). Beta versions are intended for more advanced user to detect, report or solve bugs until it will be a stable release...
It sounds like you haven't configured your network connection properly during the install. So please try Mageia 2 and report again, if you have still problems with it.

I have been using this OS since Mandrake and I can confirm that this problem still exists with the Official Mageia 3 release (64 bit DVD).. I have tried the installation 3 times, with and without configuring network media. Connection test confirms the internet is working, but it still gets hung on "starting network manager wait online" so the previous post of "stay away from beta and use Mageia 2" is not a valid answer. In fact, it's a rather lazy and arrogant response that wasn't worth posting.. Thanks for being condescending, but maybe someone who actually knows about this issue can answer?

Machine: Alienware M14x
Internet: Wired/Ethernet

Which desktop environment did you choose during installation, and which installation media did you use?

Thank you for responding..

I used DVD 64bit from the BitTorrent link (http://www.mageia.org/en/downloads/get/ ... &torrent=1). I started with a clean 750GB HDD, told it to "erase and use entire disk". It recognized my wireless card, but could not install it.. so I chose Wired connection.

- First attempt, I chose the "Custom" option for desktops and installed ALL desktop environments and almost all software.. could not boot.
- Second attempt, installed Gnome only.. again, telling it to "erase and use entire disk" to help ensure no leftovers.. still could not boot.
- Third attempt, tried the "Install -> Upgrade" option.. tried a few different network configurations but wired was the best working one..

As of now I am still getting hung on "Starting network manager wait online...". I had my ethernet plugged in during the boot process, maybe I can try without.. I appreciate any help and also I will post a solution if I find one.

Thanks

Well, first we need to sort out if your installation is currently in a consistent and reproducable state, which seems unlikely from your explanations.
Also, you didn't mention why the system didn't boot for the first two attempts?

You could also just boot to failsafe mode and configure networkmanager to no start on boot, but before explaining that
i'd like to have some more information.

First two attempts did not boot because it got hung on "starting network manager wait online".

The current installation does not have the safe mode option, just "Mageia 3". I will try another clean installation later this evening.. I will take a few pics along the way.

Maybe you should not select gnome, then you shouldn't get networkmanager by default.

Did a KDE only installation... success!
