[SOLVED] Browser Doesnt load sites

Hello all,
Hoping someone can quickly point me in the right direction or to the forum link where I can find the below help.

I installed Mageia 2 and am completely new to the OS and also a beginner in the Linux world. So I am uncertain what to configure so my browser can go to other sites.

I have a desktop install that is running on a wired connection to my cisco router

> ifconfig shows I have internet connetion
> I am able to download updates
> can use browser to go to Mozilla and Mageia sites ok and even google. But when I click on any link within a google search results it gives me a "server not found" error.
> typing in the url in the browser also errors out.

Things I have done;

> checked cisco security settings
> checked network eth0 settings don't see anything wrong
> DNS is ok - retrieve via DHCP
> checked Firewall settings on Mageia and all looks ok(missed something huh?)
> tried different browsers with same result

Please guide me in making the right configuration changes.

Thanks in advance

I hope someone can help, but that's very mysterious. I was having some problems with Google and You Tube yesterday (06/14), and I assumed it was Google related. It resolved. It this still a problem? Have you tried other search engines? Did you check Firefox preferences, Advanced|Network? Are your browsers set to use a proxy? Do you have other computers running other OSes, and if so does the same problem exist? Have you tried a terminal browser like Lynx? (A bit difficult to use if you never have, but you sound like you'd have no problem figuring it out.)

I hate to see a new user having such problems, and I wish I knew more.

vcg3rd,

Thanks for repling. Yes I have checked Firefox settings, am not using a proxy and have other PCs with different OSes working ok. I tried Konquerer and Chromium and both displayed the same issue.

I tried Lynx as suggested and some what figured it out and went to google but other than that anyting esle said could not fetch remote server.

That's just weird. I wonder if it has something to do with the rollout of IPv6 on 06/06? Maybe try:

Type about:config in the address bar, press Enter.
Find network.dns.disableIPv6 in the list.
Right-click -> Toggle.
Restart your Mozilla application and try again.

This is fixed for Mozilla Firefox. As an extra challenge I will look at doing the same for the other browsers and Lynx possiby.

Thanks again vcg3rd

You can also disable it globally for all applications from Mageia Control Center -> Network & Internet -> Network Center -> Advanced Settings -> Disable IPv6
Firefox is one of the rare cases where this doesn't work sometimes, depending on the IPv6 implementation of your ISP.

I have had the same problem with Firefox in the past with installs and at the same time been able to surf with Konqueror. My solution each time, that has worked, is to disable ipv6 support in MCC and in Network Manager... (This did not work with Mandriva 2011 however.. :shock: )

After that SURFS UP! :o

I have RANTED about this in two other distribution websites due to initial problems with sample LIVE CD disks and not being able to surf. My belief is that experienced users will probably figure out the problem after a bit of effort. NEW USERS are unable to get it to surf though and choose to try some other version of software rather than struggle with something that should work as automatically as possible on a LIVE CD.

Do we want new users? YES, I believe we do.

Will our Live CD surf without intervention in detailed settings? (If yes, we might have a new user. If no we lost a new user, probably.)

Who have been the best at this working without intervention over the last few years? UBUNTU, MEPIS, SUSE, MINT and a few others.. All Time Worst? MANDRIVA 2011

I even had an install of Solaris 10 set up a wi fi card in a desktop and be ready to surf without my doing any settings for the ipv6 issue. Yes, ipv6 is coming. It is not fully implemented at this time and should be off by default, I believe. I think that the added setting in Network Manager that some distributions have that allows the guest user of a LIVE CD to choose themselves as a recognized user of Network Manager in the advanced setting button is why some of them surf and others will not. I wrote about this in a Mandriva forum a couple of months ago. All the LIVE disks I used that offered that extra setting surfed with ease. Others did not. I am a bit off topic here perhaps but the thought was brought up by having the same experience as the original poster..

Cheers,

gcd
